looking for a couple new cinches.. my guy that i run can be super cinchy sometimes, has always been like that, and no he does not have ulcers. Well, I've been looking into the air flex and the mohair/alpaca cinches and wondering which would be the best for him, he isn't prone to rashes or anything like that. just wanting to know what the best cinches to buy are?

also, do you prefer roper or straight? i use both just wanted to hear everyones opinion about what they use.
:-)

I use 100% mohair you can't go wrong using it or alpaca. Just buy a good brand. I use a classic equine roper style but want a 5 star.

Sorry to go a little OT, but CYA, do you find that you have to clean your shearling cinches often? I'm looking into them for my gelding that, like the OP, is just a bit grouchy when you cinch up (and I know he doesn't have ulcers and his saddle fits him well). He's just a delicate flower of a boy, and I think even the softest mohair isn't going to work for him.

Would it be worth trying this?

Borrow a cinch you think may work from a  friend.  Warm your horse up and train as usual, then before unsaddling, stick a thermometer between the cinch and his body and measure the temperature and see which one actually can breather and stay cooler . I bet the mohair is actually best but some new ones with airholes may help.
The neoprene and synthetics may actually act as a heat sink and absorb heat compared to the natural wool especially if the sun can shine on it a bit.  But the wool may not grip as well so again a judgement call.

Just cowboy logic?

See my horse doesn't seem to like the mohair cinches as much. Right now I'm OK with my Pro Equine neoprene cinch while my horse is shedding out. I was thinking of getting a shearling cinch in the summer. I used to have a Pro Orthopedic cinch that I really liked because it was more of a wetsuit material rather than neoprene.

I have used shearling cinches for years, I do not cut my horses in half, I use csi pads, proper fitting saddles,

And have never had a saddle slide

I don't use breast collars unless riding in the mountains, where I go any saddle will slide some

When I get done riding and the cinch is wet and sweaty I hook it to the keeper and let it air dry.  The next day I ride I use a rubber curry to lightly brush it and loosen the sweat and fluff it up.  The one thing I like about them is the buckles are completely covered by the shearling.

That's why I like them as well. It seems more comfortable to have the buckle padded. You're more dedicated than I am....I use the roper CE ones and chunk them once a year and just replace. I don't want any neoprene or anything 'tacky' feeling on their back or cinch area. I've never had one slide. Side Note: I do only use leather latigos with them because the nylon doesn't have any give to it.

I only use leather latigos also.  Not a fan of the nylon.  I don't know if I'm dedicated but I have squirrly horses so I try to keep them soft.  I use 5 Star pads and clean them off the same way so its just gotten to be a habit.

I wanna try the new prof. Choice cinch that's got some stretch to it. Just wish it wasn't neoprene. Right now I have an old mohair (I think) that's getting rusty buckles and is about due to be replaced.
