Location: Mississippi | I have a couple of horses that seem to be allergic to fly spray. They both break out in whelps when sprayed. They are not allergic to the spray we use in the barn spray system (Pyranha) or to Pyranha Wipe and Spray in the trigger bottle. However, this year they seem to be reacting to the Pyranha Aerosol. Ultra Shield in the black container is a no no too. Anyone have suggestions for something that will be less likely to break them out? I hate to keep throwing my money away and causing them to break out. Trying to find something I can get locally if I run out of the Wipe and Spray, and they are out at the farm supply. |

Location: Buffalo, Wyoming | Homemade Fly Spray for Horses #2*
Mix the following:
1 cup white distilled vinegar
1 cup Water
1/3 cup Dawn dish soap (blue, not ultra) *
Mix ingredients in a spray bottle. Shake well and use as you would any fly spray.
***NOTE: Dawn Dishwashing does contain formaldehyde. If you wish to substitute a non-formaldehyde dish soap, this would work just as well. Lemon Brite is one. |

Location: Mississippi | Thank you all so much for the suggestions. I will try the homemade. We do not have a local TSC, but there is one within 35 miles. We only have a local farm supply, and they do not stock much. I usually order online. |

This is what I normally use as well, but this time I got the aerosol version. I assumed it would be the same thing, just a different application - apparently it is not. One of the horses does not like being squirted with a trigger sprayer. He tolerates the aerosol, but it makes them both break out. Weirdness! |

I used to be a HUGE Pyrhana fan, until last fall. I had a small amount leak out onto the floor of my horse trailer in my tack room. It lifted the carpet up off the floor and literally "ate" it. Not sure I want that on my horse anymore:( Makes me sad because that stuff really worked against ND birds (mosquitos)! |

Found it easier than I thought I would!!!!
The recipe is: 1 cup of Avon Skin So Soft, 2 cups white vinegar, 1 Tbsp Citronella Oil or Eucalyptus Oil (found in health food stores) 1-3 cups of water (3 cups to repel flies) Shake well, cap tightly and spray as needed. Mix in gal jug and pour up as needed into spray bottle.
I have used it without the oil, mainly bc i forget to get them!!! n it still seems to work!!! Plus pony smells super good!!!! |

| Noticed Pyranha is making a water based spray now as well. Maybe this would be better for sensitive skinned horses. |

Location: Tennessee | I use Cutter Backwoods. Yea I know its for people, but it works AMAZINGLY. You don't have to drench them in it like a fly spray, just a good mist. Maybe it won't they're allergies.
