Had a horse that became overly ratey for no apparent reason?? I will try not to write a book, but I have a mare that had a year off. I thought she had an injury last year, but turned out to just be foot soreness.  Anyway, I have legged her up and now made a total of 4 runs on her this year. Prior to her lay off, I would have called her a pretty finished rodeo horse, consistently running at least 17.5 ish on a standard pattern, easily. She is OTT and typically is ratey, but has plenty of go too. She did bleed last year, so I started running her on Lasix. This year she has not showed any external bleeding and has not coughed or seemed to have issues at all, but I am still running her on lasix, to be safe.
Run #1: local jackpot- was overly ratey, timing off but still was 3rd in 1D
Run #2: jackpot- super ratey, almost fell off trying to get her by the second barrel. Clocked deep in 2D. I don't normally do slow work on her (not usually needed) but realized I was having serious issues and needed to do some slow work on going BY the barrels.
Run #3: cracked out at a big rodeo performance- barrels in middle of arena. Thought this would be to my advantage with how she'd been working. RAN OFF. Sorta turned the first, blew by the second and then i pulled her up.
Run #4: local jackpot- ready to be aggressive. Literally felt like I could not get her by the second & third barrels- she is insisting on trying to turn too soon and put her turn right on top of the barrel, so she has to come out really awkward in order to not hit it.Felt awful. Won the 3D.

WTF is going on with my horse???? I'm used to ratey, but this is ridiculous. Have you ever had a horse be TOO ratey because something was wrong??? Usually when mine have been sore in the past they seem to quit working and want to run off and NOT turn, whereas she is over anticipating. Any advice is appreciated. Of course I will do more slow work trying to free her up but I feel like this isn't even my horse. Or who the heck has been riding it wrong and creating bad habits that she never had before????? LOL

I agree with the PP, sounds like hock issues to me.

How long ago? She could be due for injection again. Or it could be something different entirely.

She was injected June 17th, so way too soon to need done again. Previously she's only needed it once a year.

Ah yep, way too soon.
I'm assuming they injected upper and lower joints and used a steroid as well as some form of hyaluronic acid ?

Ok, so since she just had her hocks done, for the sake of discussion lets try to eliminate that from physical things it could be. Has anyone had a horse get too ratey for other physical/pain type reasons?

Thanks

Bleeding, they either run off or over work. What's her blood work values? Has she not recovered from her runs perhaps?

Ok I hope its not this... Last year there were a couple times she actually bled out a nostril, or came out coughing. But she's had the year off, and no sign of respiratory issues this year, but I've run her on lasix & ventipulmin to be safe. She's very fit and has generally had at least a week between the few runs i've made. I ran her at a rodeo Saturday & she inhaled the first barrel and then absolutely plowed into the second, despite my best efforts. Im just not sure if its a training issue (new, suddenly...) or some physical issue. That seems to be the general pattern this year. Cant get deep enough into 2nd & 3rd.

I made are an appointment to have my vet check her out & do some blood work. She has been hard to keep weight on recently but I was attributing that to her amount of work & hauling. She is on omeprazole & is not showing any tenderness at her ulcer points.

mine hadn't been firing. She was kind of anticipating the 2nd barrel more so than in the past but mostly she just wasn't running hard and clocking in the 2d/3D against legit horses. It ended up being a rear suspensory. Ultrasound found a little thickening but we couldn't find a tear. Horse wasn't lame riding or in the pasture but flexed very lame.

Thanks, we will definitely flex her tomorrow.

Any other ideas??

Pretty sure this has already been stated... But yes, my free runner started hitting barrels when he was bleeding. And again when he was having joint pain. I've had him 5 years and probably hit 10-15 barrels. Of course a few were just timing/positioning. But anytime he hits one on the way in with his shoulder, something's going on.

Thank you to everyone who responded. Here is an update after our trip to the vet yesterday:

1. Nothing on flexion of front legs or hocks
2. Sore in lumbar back still, even though we injected it
3. drew blood, no results yet
4. Left ovary had a large structure and was very tender on palpation; gave a shot of HCG

Interestingly, its been the left hand turns (her second & third barrels) that she's been so scotchy about. Also, she seemed like she was in heat constantly, but I thought that was just her & was ignoring it. Whoops I guess.

So I took her to the local jackpot, mainly just so that I could school on her, and she won it. It was by far the best run she's made so far this year. Perfect lol. Now if only we could make that happen at a rodeo. Oh horses

Didn't see this mentioned but could be your saddle pinching also. I had same problem at one time only with gelding and as soon as I changed saddles problem stopped. Just something else to check if pain issue is gone

I'm guessing you ultrasounded the ovaries, if not please do, a large structure that word scares me, is it a tumor? Or is it a cyst? This is what I would be asking the vet.

I would also look at mare magic, and be speaking to the vet about regumate or something similar
