Curious if anyone knows of any daughters or sons that succeed outside the barrel pen? A friend of mine is looking at one soon for a potential english prospect!! So just being nosey if they are versatile horses or pretty much used for barrels and ranch? Thanks!

I believe some have been in steer wrestling. I had one that was a dud as a barrel horse. He was too small for a roping horse. But he has made an awesome ranch horse.

I don't understand not buying a horse that's bred to excell at the discipline you are interested in.

Neither do I, but tell my little 14 hh horse that she isn't supposed to be able to jump and do it well with wonderful scope and form. If she can pick him up for a good price and he moves/looks the way she wants or if she has any interest outside of english riding in case he doesn't work out I'd still give it a shot personally. If she's paying what those horses generally go for I'd pass.

my frenchmans guy grand daughter absolutely loves to jump. She has great form over fences as well. She will over jumps if its a small x-rail, and will almost drag you to jump it. Im a big believer in versatility to keep minds sane so she has gone english and jumped.

My Frenchman's Guy gelding would have been a great English prospect.  We have a mare that would not have been.  He is long and stretchy.  She has more of a quarter horse build.

There has been a son of FG at the NFR the last 2 years in steer wrestling. He's REALLY good at it. All the guys want to ride him. He didn't like barrels. I'm a firm believer in finding what the horse enjoys and you will both be happier.

I don't know about F.G. babies but I was looking at a Perks Alive mare that could 100% have been a hunter and was a 10 mover. Stunning mare but her price jumped out of my budget.  (I wanted her as a barrel/heel horse prospect).

Yeah this.  I wasn't looking at it like a FG horse can't be an english horse, I am sure they could be.  I was looking at it from the viewpoint of getting an outstanding english horse.  I doubt that would be a FG horse.  I guess it depends on at what level you want to show english.  The AQHA HUS english horses I know are huge almost 100 percent TB's.

Maybe FG crossed on a 17 hand TB mare.  Yeah.  That's the one I'd choose.  Depending on the discipline, an "English" horse can be a variety of things, like a "Western" horse.  Dressage, jumping, HUS - one horse doesn't fit all.

The question was are they capable of doing anything other than barrels or roping. The answer is absolutely YES. Whether they will be a world class performer at something else must be judged on a case by case basis. Maybe the level the person wants to compete at doesn't require 'world class".

Totally agree, I was answering an unasked question.

Yes is my answer.

They will be smaller than the warmbloods and TBs that she will be competing against, obviously; Unless crossed on a TB or a warmblood (probably not). The ones I have ridden DID have very flat and forward motion though, and would do well as a hunter or flat equitation horses. I haven't seen any actually jump to say whether they are scopey or lazy-legged, etc.

Teddy O'Connor was a 14'2 WORLD CLASS eventing PONY. Was he bred to do it? Not so much. COULD he do it? Obviously yes. Horses can do whatever you want them to do, the question is HOW WELL can they do it. He had some HUGE victories with Karen O'Connor, against horses twice his size, with FAR "superior" breeding. If the FG horse is what she's looking for, there's not much reason to not give him a shot, and if he fails - she can sell him as a barrel horse.lol

She's just wanting to do english shows in her state n stuff nothing serious. This mare is 15.3HH and is an own daughter..pretty tall I thought for a FG! Her owner has just passed away and the horse is only 4yrs old. Nicely broke but hasn't been shown in anything yet.

.... the price tag on an own daughter.... either buy and resell for a profit if its that cheap and buy a more pleasure type, or skip straight to the pleasure type. I thought we were talking grand or great grand....own daughters though, probably wasting better options by doing it.

Guys Piece ofthe Pie is 15.3 and has an amazing flat kneed trot. There is no reason they couldn't show english. I did open shows on my g-son of Burrs First Down x Mr Dark Jet before he broke his pelvis. My late stallion actually produced fluid english movement in 99% of his offspring.

First off, if she can get her cheap, I don't see why not. But there's no way I would pay "retail" price for a sound 4YO daughter of FG to use in a discipline other than what she's bred for.

I've had several nice HUS horses back when I was younger.. only one of them was bred to be a show horse. It's more about body type, if they have a good type and flat kneed movement you should be fine. My Reckless Dash mare would make a nice english horse. In fact, I showed her one time last year cold turkey and she won a HUS class out of 5 horses. She had never been ridden english before, never been asked to canter collected down the rail for as long as I asked her to. She was just very well broke, flat mover, and has a nice long neck and she likes to collect.
