So my vet and I are teamed up and have a plan for my very saucy mare!

We are doing one more round of omprazole (sp) and then scope her to see if they are healing and then if the ulcers are healed we are going to try hormone injections.

This mare is coming four. I've turned her out since November but kept her on her good feed. She's in the pen with broodmares and she has been since day one a witch to other horses.

But she's not as fat as I'd like her to be. She looks like she's super fit. Not ganted up or anything and she has a nice coat.

She also has a heart murmur. Not much we can do about it. Just gotta keep a watch on it.

I can't keep her tied beside one without her kicking them.

So my question is my vet recommends I don't waste me money on mare supplements.

This mare is TALENTED. So I wanna make sure I look after her! And I just had her teeth done today and they were fine

Has any one had absolute success in one on supplements?

Have you ever met a supplement that you didn't recommend?

To the OP, I'm not 100% certain what you are really asking, but if she is having hormonal issues the only thing that is going to fix it is hormone therapy.

Regumate, Altroenest et. al

Sorry I didn't make it more clear lol. We arnt 100 percent it is hormonal issues.

Once we finish treating for ulcers and she doesn't improve we will treat for hormonal issues. My vet doesn't beleive much in herbs. But so many people do.

I'm just wondering if any of you have found the herbs do work on your mares that get the hormonal injections.

I haven't treated a mare for this yet

I used raspberry leaves on a mare, and it made a world of difference! Plus it's way cheaper than mare magic.

I don't think I asked your opinion. I just suggested she look at it. I do know that Brittany uses it and that Sheri uses it. And they haul a lot of mares. I have had mares with hormonal issues. And if I had one now I would definetly try this. What do you have against oxygen? And no if she is having hormonal issues ,hormonal therapy is not the only thing that works. There are a lot of natural remedies .To the original poster, have you treated her for ulcers?

The OP states that she is currently treating for ulcers.

If she is that moody and marish there is no herb or oral supplement that will fully do the trick. Regumate is your best option.

I've used Regumate. It works but it's a pain because you have to be careful about it. Meaning don't get it on yourself or others. Different herbal things did not work for the mare that I had

The directions say to give regumate orally, which can increase your risk of getting it on you if your horse spits it,etc. I just use a syringe or a medicine cup, fill it to the 10ml mark and pour it on her feed nightly. You don't have to worry about it getting on you, plus its tasteless so they don't even bother.

I'm going to share a portion of an email I received during a consult from Dr. Schell of Nouvelle Veterinary that could partially explain why your current program isn't getting the job done.  Could be that the heart condition, her poor digestion, and her moody attitude is all likely related. This is a little bit outside the box, but this way of thinking and the more I have learned has really changed the way I view my horse's issues and how to better manage them through understanding the source rather than the symptom.  You might think about posting your question on www.secondvet.com on the forum there just to see what additional information and advice you might get from Dr. Schell himself.  This isn't totally directed to moody mare syndrome, but from the way I have seen my horse's attitude improve through using the Cur-OST products, I would sure give it a shot, re-evaluate the feed program, etc before I began giving her regumate or other homonal therapies, just for the simple fact of how it can affect her reproductively, long term.  Very interesting concepts and have definitely been worth exploring for my horses.  The more I have read into TCM, the more I realize that many of the conditions we are trying to treat are many times only the tip of the iceberg that we can see. The underlying condition causing that tip to stick above the water is what we need to focus on to eliminate the symptoms we are able to see.

"In Chinese medicine they explain that with overwork (physical/mental), we exhaust our vital energy (Qi) and also drain the body of Yang energy.  Now, in Chinese medicine, they focus their theories mainly on 5 organs; liver, heart, spleen, lung and kidney, in that order.  The preceeding organ fuels the next organ in line.  Liver feeds the heart, heart feeds the spleen etc.  This means that if the liver function is poor, then likewise the heart will be poor as well.  Spleen is really indicative of digestion, which is what we have focused on with the leaky gut and other issues.  When spleen is poor, digestion is poor and fluids accumulate, such as phlegm or edema.

So, in the body, the kidney is responsible for the Yin and the Yang.  Yin being more cold and Yang being more warm.  In addition to fueling the next organ in line, each organ also controls every other organ, so kidney also controls heart, liver also controls spleen etc.

Taking this into consideration, with over work (mental/physical), we drain the body either of Yin or Yang.  Athletes are more prone to Qi and Yang deficiencies.  Each organ also controls certain body parts.  Kidney is responsible for the back and hearing.  Liver is responsible for eyes, tendons and muscles.

So...we have an equine athlete, often overworked, stressed mentally and on a crappy diet.  Qi becomes deficient, low energy or stamina. The Yang energy becomes depleted and contributes to back pain, such as SI pain.  The kidney, if deficient enough of Yang, fails to stimulate the heart and thus, we have circulatory problems, such as stocking up and even joint pain.  Stamina is also impacted as the heart and circulation are impaired."

If you decide her issues are hormone related - This ^^ My hubs was giving the Regumate for me and it was a PITA when his busy season started.

I have fed raspberry leaves too - it took a dang long time to see anything, and I couldn't contribute the results directly to the leaves or the mare not cycling anymore.

I do know that marbles can sometimes be used with good results to "fake" pregnancy and reduce the amount of hormone swings. Make sure a vet "installs" an autoclaved, clean one and they should do the removal as well.

I probably wouldn't go the sterilization route due to her younger age. (I know some ropers who did with good success on a 10 yo after they pulled embryos and froze them)

Good Luck!

Raspberry leaves are cheap and work for most moody mares. Or there is also Mare-Aculous. Both are carried by Animal element and both work great on moody mares.
