| Hey all! One of my geldings needs to be put on a half to 1 gram of bute daily. Old shoulder injury and a few other issues. He is trail sound and is now retired from running barrels. Previcox is not as effective on this horse as bute and I have tried curost pure, and most of the potent yucca/devils claw supplements. Bute really works. Now that he has to be on it long term I want to protect his insides as much as I can. He is on curost total already. Vet says at 1 gram daily he will be just fine but I want to make sure his GI tract is good. ANy suggestions??? Thanks!!!! |

| Slippery elm has helped my husband with his recent diagnosis of IBD. He has to take it 2 hours before or 2 hours after he takes his meds because it costs the gut. Saying that I realize that may be hard to do with horses and work schedules. |

Location: Southern Indiana | We retired my mare at age 10 due to a bone chip in her front knee that nothing could be done for....by time she was in her late teens she lived on a very high dose of bute daily. It never did anything to her side affect wise. She never went off grain or showed any signs that she wasn't normal. Not all horses are equal but in my experience I wouldn't worry. If they are eating it in grain, how much is really going to irritate the stomach? I could see it tearing one up on an empty stomach, but not with food. |

Your vet is right ... 1/2 to 1 gram of bute is not even close to having any side affects ..
This will save you a bunch of money over giving Previcox or Cur Ost Pure ...
which are for serious debilitating injures or arthritis ...
If you have any concerns using the bute long term ..
get you some powered aspirin to put in his feed and alternate
the two monthly ... aspirin is the only nsaid that works on all three ..
pain, swelling and inflammation .. and is harmless ..
If horse is obese ... put him on a diet of more grass hay and less
alfalfa or feed ... being over weight is not a good thing for creaky
joints ... lol
GOOD LUCK .. |

Location: MN | I had one that I gave 1 gram of bute daily as well to manage arthritis. She never had any issues. I agree that side affects can be case by case. My particular horse didn't really have any other stressors that would cause additonal concern (ie: low key personality, mostly outside barn, etc.) |

| Thanks all! I figured he would be OK and he has a massive appetite so if that decreases I will know! LOL I might add the Curost stomach to his diet as well. |

Location: Deep South | I've added MVP Gastroplex pellets to my guys diet and I'm really impressed with the results I've had. He's an easy keeper, with a great appetite, but I have horses coming and going from my place fairly regularly (every couple months), and was noticing that every time he lost a pasture buddy he would show signs of ulcers. Adding the Gastroplex stopped the symptoms. And it's definitely saving me money in ulcer meds.

Your info is not necessarily true. Long term aspirin use can cause bleeding disorders. My vet suggested it years ago as a preventative, my horse developed ulcers and had a massive go bleed. We almost lost her. I would use aspirin with caution |

Aspirin is not harmless. It can cause ulcers and allergic reactions. My sister's horse nearly died from an allergic reaction to aspirin. Although it may not be common, it can happen. As with any medication, use with care and closely observe them. |

My old man has been on aspirin for YEARS because of eye issues. Never knew I should be concerned----if he was gonna have issues do you think I'd have seen them by now? |
