Thinking about doing my own vaccinations this year. Pros & Cons either way?

Main question...I do travel quite a bit, will other states accept my vaccination records if not done by a vet, and are vaccination records required on a health certificate? I noticed that sometimes my vet does not put the vaccinations on the health cert, and if I can save a little bit by buying and giving them myself, I will.

I think if you keep your invoice, that should be proof enough for the vet. My vet does not put vaccinations on the health certificate.

Years ago, some people from out west (of the LA -TX line) met some people from FL in Marshall TX to trade horses. The horse going to FL had to have a temperature on the health certificate to get into FL. I called my vet in another town and he took the horse's temperature and issued a new health certificate.

I always do mine, never caused an issue. Although I always inject mine into the hind quarter rather than the neck. Never had an issues with them even when getting the health certificate, as long as the horse is noticeably healthy and does not run a temp, and all vitals are fine you should be good to go.

I do all mine and our clients. The individual vaccines come with a sticker that shows what vaccine was given the lot number etc. I put that in our horses files and have not had an issue.

I also keep all that info in the off chance there is some recall of the vaccine I can double check the lot numbers against what I gave.

Thank you all so much! This is perfect. You have made me feel better about this decision. I can buy the same 6 way that my vet gives for about $40 - $50 cheaper than him giving it....times 4 horses, this saves a ton for me.

Thank you for the tips on the record keeping too. This was one of my main concerns!!

I give my own because I like to space them out, I give them a week or so apart.

I don't think there are any federal regulations that require us to vaccinate horses.  They've never been listed on health papers.  Only thing I can think of that would require a vaccine would be:
a specific facility requirement, i.e. some racetracks require 90 day EHV vaccs be given
Insurance policies may require you give some vaccines, i.e. WNV

I've always done my own and never had a problem. I keep all of my receipts from when I bought the vaccinations and each horse that I'm hauling has a separate folder with all of their documentation in it to keep organized.

I have always done my own and never had an issue.  But, if your horse has insurance be sure to check your insurance policy!
There are companies that require vets to administer vaccinations in order to cover a claim.  I know a few insurance companies that specifically state WNV must be administered by a vet.  If your horse gets WNV and you vaccinated yourself, the insurance company may still deny the claim as you did not follow what the policy specifically stated.

I am all for saving money but I also like to keep a good rapport with my vet. If something goes wrong with vaccination you have recourse through the vet. If I need health papers, prescriptions etc., it is sometimes worth the money for him to do my vaccines. I need to balance the savings with the vet's goodwill. At the very least I will try to buy the shots from him to give myself, that way I can space them out if needed. I just plain skipped them last year.

Edited to add: You need to check the states requirements which you travel through. Some , like Oklahoma, require a Rabies Vacc, so that must be on your health paper......will your vet issue health papers with that on there is he/she did not administer??? I think there is some liability there.

All but the EHV-1 shots.  There has to be vet records on those with lot/batch numbers. And booster given every 90 days.

I do mine myself, but I don't travel out of state. I have a file on each horse and I keep a record of vaccinations in each horses file.

I would think the benefit of having a vet do them is in the case of a vaccine reaction or vaccine failure, you vet can talk to the manufacturer and you may be able to get some sort of compensation in regards to treating the horse if you have to. Not all vaccine companies do things like that, but some do.

I just have the vet do them. It's easier (I'm lazy) and quicker (we're there anyway to do their teeth and whatnot) and I like supporting her and giving her the business.

I have my vet do Spring shots, including rabies and WNV, in the Spring when they come out to pull Coggins. I do my own Fall Shots.

Is this required in every state? I see that is required in OK at one arena (that I know of). I will discuss this one with my vet, but I wanted to ask here as well.

Thank you all for your input!

I give mine, simply because my horse HATES the vet.  Once I give him the vaccines, with the vet standing there, then he can draw coggins.  Otherwise, it's no bueno.
