My hubby won a nice rawhide futurity built headstall and I rode my horse in it yesterday (first time being used). The rawhide is laced on the browband and when I unsaddled my horse he had bare spots where the rawhide rubbed on him! I felt so bad and tempted to throw away the whole thing but are there any tips or tricks on softening rawhide or maybe use something underneath it so it won't rub his hair off again?

I had a headstall that did that to my mare's face, softening it didn't work well for me but ray hole's vaquero rawhide cream may help some. Stick a piece of moleskin on the back of the headstall rub it down well and if it's having trouble sticking heat it up with a hairdryer, that should help the stickies work better and it will protect his face.
