My vet thinks that IM joint injections would be good for my horse. I have a couple different places to buy them that are quite a bit cheaper than the vet charges but you have to have a script.....which they will not write me!!!!
Suggestions?
Experiences w IM joint injections? They told me feed supplements were a complete waste of $! I have been to 2 diff clinics and both are pretty much saying the same thing. Help!

THat stinks about your vet not giving you a prescription! My vet prefers it! She doesn't like to carry all the meds with her and says her prices cant compete with online places so she is HAPPY to call in prescriptions.

I have worked as a vet tech for years and know that it is frustrating for vets to do all the work for you and you go buy product somewhere else for cheaper, however too bad so sad, medications are expensive when buying from the vet because they DO mark it up A LOT. I work in pharmaceutical sales now and buy all my meds through work (especially IM joint meds) I agree with the vets that most feed through joint supplements are a waste of your money. What IM joint injections are you looking at getting? Personally I am a HUGE fan of the Pentosan and Pentosan w/ Glucosamine it has helped my guy out loads! He was sore this summer and went from running 3/4 D times to 1/2D.

I have no idea why vets would think they did the work and buying meds elsewhere is an insult? You PAY the vet to do their job of diagnosis etc. When a human goes to the doctor the doctor doesn't sell the drugs, a pharmacy does. Most people have insurance so pay little to nothing for the meds. Vets should be the same way

Many vets maintain a pharmacy in house so of course they want you to buy from them. My vet and former boss will price match to keep you buying through her BUT she wouldn't deny a script for someone to buy something at a better price. I would find a vet who will write the script for you.

Well......I have a bottle of Pentosan I bought for another horse last year that I sold. I was going to use it but it's expired!!!! Ugh an entire 50ml bottle! I asked about Pentosan but of course they recommend legend and adequan next. :(. So frustrating!

If the vet was price competitive they wouldn't lose the sales.

I buy 95% of my meds somewhere other than the vet, because I can buy them cheaper.

ETA: I didn't read your second response before I posted. The price matching would and has kept me from going other places.

Mine just orders it from the pharmacy. I stop by and pick it up. I have price checked meds other places (online), and she's always less, or the same. I'm pretty sure she gets a discount and is not marking the product up at all when selling it to me. I am lucky to have found her. She is very reasonable.

By law they HAVE to write you the script.  Tell him if he does not write you a script, you will report him to the vet med board!  Seriously, they have no choice if you ask them to give you a script.

Use the Pentosan, there is nothing wrong with it.  If anything the efficacy will just be a little less, but probably not even that!

I have asked my vet to price match online and they say they cant do it because the online places buy drugs in Bulk. But I am glad she writes a prescription if I need it. :)

I was told that my vet would charge a $12 script fee, but they didn't.  I have paid literally twice the price for things from the clinic, but I just take what he says at that point, then request a script online.
