What do y'all that have mares do when they are in heat? Do y'all give them something to keep them from going into heat while they are being used? Or how do you deal with it? I am having a hard time with my mare and I think that is part of the problem... Any advice is welcome! Thank y'all:)

have you tried Mare Magic? worked great for a mare I had. She would squeal, rub up against the trailer, squeal some more, LOL! She never did that again after feeding her Mare Magic every day.

When you find something that works, let me know. Mare Magic is a no work for my psychotic in heat mare.

I've tried Mare Magic, progesterone pellets - they kind of worked, not well enough, progesterone shots, nothing keeps her on an even keel. I refuse to use regumate. That stuff makes them worse after you stop using it.

Why do you say Regumate makes them worse? I just had a vet prescribe it for my mare who has cysts (for a lack of a better explanation) on her ovaries. I've been trying to find out what the negatives are to using it but haven't seen any yet until this post. Just curious.

Sometimes u just have to accept it. I only do mares can't stand geldings I have a super ****y one I just find most of her moodiness entertainment we all joke about her because she's so witchy I mean unless u have one that's dangerous I would try to work thru it if u give her something are u going to continue to always supplement her throughout her life? If she's having cycle problems that's something that needs to be vet checked. She friends who use the regimuate or whatever and they swear by it.

If you're going to try Mare Magic - call your local healthfood store and see if they carry/can order raspberry leaves. Cut your cost by a ton.

I give my mare a shot of alternogest once a week to keep her out of heat. It has helped a lot!

It messes up their cycles after you stop using it. When I got my mare off the track where they used it on her, it took a year for her cycles to get regular, she would cycle through the winter.

Besides, regumate is way too dangerous for women to handle. Not worth it.

So if you pull them off regumate by just up and stopping. She will cycle immediately and it will be a hard and heavy one - this is my experience. I have used it with good luck - but I was UBER careful and my guy (SO) gave it for me daily. .

I currently use mare magic/raspberry leaves. It does work - but I will say that there is some lag time for it to get in their system and you must feed it daily, no skips. The longer I have fed it the better my mare has been when she actually does come into heat. It seems to be helping with her overall general witchy attitude when she is in heat. Normally she is a real sweet mare that doesn't squeal and freak over things.

I would love to accept it, but when she tears the fences down by leaning and banging on them and making her sides so sore I can't touch her, I need to do something. I've tried bute, it doesn't help. The pellets helped, but she still came in, they just shortened her heat days.

I've had good luck this year with "performance mare product" from oxygen. my mare has some attitude still but that's just her. I've had her on this since January and she has only been seen peeing/squirting twice and it was very mild and only when hauled with a "super in heat all the time" mare of my friends.

its way more pricy than I like but it has worked so I wont risk changing it this year.

Had my mega witch on Mare Magic for a couple of years then noticed it didnt seem to be helping her as much as it had in years past. I tried Mare Ease, Smart Pak carries it. Love it. totally different mare she is happy and so is our household. My husband constantly threatened to kill her or sell her.  Neither would ever happen as she takes the best care of me and he knows it, but we both just got so sick of her horrible attitude.

The Mare Moods by Silver Lining works great for me. It is made up of more than just Raspberry leaves to help the entire system.

Have you tried THE's formula. They have a moody mare blend. You can call them up and talk to them and tell them how bad it is and they can always add extra stuff to it. This is what I did for mine because she was crazy and always attacking things (people, horses, cats, dogs, i swear her reflection).

Have a marble put in her. It was the best decision we've ever made for my boyfriend's main heel horse. She was extra sassy when she was in heat. She would short him out heeling and she got where she would kick the absolute crap out of his trailer. We tried everything from kicking chains to drugs, but nothing worked until we had a marble put in her about 3 years ago. Ever since then she has been wonderful in the trailer and never shows signs of heat. Our vet checked it last week and said it's still in place and no scar tissue so she's in good shape. In the fall we're going to take it out so she can be bred in the spring of 2015. I don't know exactly how it works but it has made a world of difference in her. And it's cheap! It was less than $100 to put it in.

Marbles are a great option! Just make sure you have a vet do them and check them yearly. If scar tissue forms, the marble will no longer stimulate the "fake pregnancy" that it is designed for and may need to come out for a time before being replaced.

I don't know why I didn't mention this earlier as we did this with my jr rodeo mare growing up! I totally blanked!

Tried Mare Magic and it worked ok. I've done the shots and they worked (have gotten expensive though), used regumate. Regumate worked okay on one horse and made the other act like a looney tune, lol. Right now I have my mare on Silver Lining Mare Moods and it seems to have really helped her.... will finish out the month and that will make 2 months on it and then decide. But it is ok right now and pretty cost effective.
