I'm embarrassed. This morning we went out of town on business...nothing unusual, have to go there about once a month maybe more. Get there, go through the normal routines, start making a deal and all of a sudden I'm all tears...for no reason. I'm very embarrassed that it happened but I didn't (and don't) know how to stop it! Usually if something is bugging me I can keep a pretty good stiff upper lip, but today I just started crying with no reason! The 3 other people in the room didn't know what to do and didn't understand why....and I can understand that because I don't understand why I did it either! Gah! Sorry for this semi-vent/semi-wanting-advice post.

I want to know why I did something like that. It seems so silly. And part of me feels like I should go back and apologize, yet I don't quite know what to say, and part of me feels like I ought to just drop it and hope everyone forgets about it. Any advice or thoughts or any just "You're not the only one"? Thanks for listening.

Just fake a yawn or tell them your allergies are really bothering you? I haven't cried yet at work but I am petrified to go to the bathroom there because the guys don't ever lock the door and even though I knock and listen before opening the door I have walked in on several of them. I seem to be more embarssed by this than they are

Google pseudobulbar affect. This may (or may not) be what you are experiencing.

Thank you much...I have no good excuse except that it is once again Monday morning and weekend was too danged short.

However, to the person who mentioned Pseudobulbar affect, thank you! I read about it, and last year I had a hard hit to the head when I endured a horse fall. I never was unconscious or had any "complications", but it gave me cause to ALWAYS wear a helmet as it could have been much worse. However the Pseudobulbar affect may explain things a little.

We all have embarrasing things happen at work. Maybe a few of mine will make you smile...

Soo the day before Spring Break we were allowed to wear jeans to work. I put on jeans, and was wearing hot pink underwear. Didn't think a THING about it, until I picked up my 6th graders from lunch and we got back to the room. Everyone gets seated, I am up front getting my computer ready, when one of my little 6th grade girls comes up to me and says "Mrs. Klein you have a hole in your pants and we can all see your hot pink underwear!"

Naturally, I wanted to be like "WHAT?! WHERE, HOW!?" But in a class full of students staring at me trying to figure out HOW they could see it was a little awkward. Thankfully they were all really nice to me about it. I just kind of pulled my shirt down REALLY low...and said "Thanks for telling me, because NONE OF my coworkers or 5th grade students let me know!"

Later that day we had an assembly and I kept getting 6th graders coming up to me asking if I fixed my hole or if my "draft" was any better. LOL

Then there was another time I got really upset with my advanced 7th grade students. They kept talking and quit frankly it made me mad because there was no reason why I shouldn't have been able to get class started right off the bat without having to deal with all the talking. So after about five minutes I get off my soap box...kids finally get started on their work, and I am walking from table to table. At this one particular table I help a student with a question and then I went to walk away....and as I am walking away the student says..."Oh and Mrs. Klein-your fly is unzipped." Normally not super embarrassing, but when you have to think about how to zip up your pants in front of a bunch if kids...well...yea that can be embarrassing.I wasn't sure to just go for it, or turn around and try and hide the fact I was zipping my pants up. I think I just went for it...

And last but not least...there was the wonderful time I was at the grocery and picking up womanly products...I was trying to get the best deal, so I was deep in thought. I picked up the BIGGEST largest box, only to look up and see an 8th grader staring straight at me-to only turn blood red and back up down the aisle like he didn't see me. And yes-it was a boy.

Hope you feel better!

Awe, thanks guys...normally I say or do something really stupid and hope no one notices. I'm not a person for a show of emotion in public...supposed to stay the three C's (calm, cool, collected) but I'll be danged if I don't do something silly sometimes.

When I was trying over the counter hormone creams, I would catch myself starting to tear up for no aparent reason. Couldn't figure it out. One day I put two and two together and read the ingredients in the cream. Aparently the Black Cohosh was the reason.
So, yes, hormones could be playing a part.

I do something that someone told me to do. When you feel tears coming, look up as high as you can without moving your head up also. I think this puts pressure on something so the tears cannot come. Whatever the reason, it does work for me. Also, if I am extra tired or if my eyes are dry, I will cry more easily.

I don't see anything wrong with this. Seems like a legit reason to me.

One of the BC pills I was on made me cry for no reason and I am not a crier! Got off that one and tried something else and I am fine again.

Last week I did my best not to break down at work. I knew why I was upset and wanted to cry but it was hard to keep it together at work.

Sending you hugs... sounds like a difficult spot to be in.  If you do apologize, just apologize for the uncomfortable situation you caused - and not necessarily for crying.  You don't need to explain why you cried, or try and create any excuse for it - it happened and that is the end of that - but you understand that it probably made your co-workers feel uncomfortable and for that you are sorry... and then you could crack a joke like you really wanted to make that sale/purchase :

Hope you are feeling better now... Sometimes thing just catch up with us.  And trust me - you are not the only one.  One time at my daughter's 8th grade graduation - they had a sign made for every student except mine.  Seems she was missing on picture day for an out of town doctor's appt and they made the signs off the class picture.  I was beyond mad... and I had to leave and when I got in my car to call my dad - I became hysterical on the phone, couldn't talk, couldn't breathe, I could only sob uncontrollably.  The only upside is I was talking with my Dad - and I was alone in my car... but I could feel it coming on at her school.... My poor Dad.... he had no idea what to do or say....

That was 7 years ago - haven't had another one of those "episodes" - but I feel your pain.

oh girl! HUGS!! I'm betting hormones.

I will add my embarrassing story too ... At the time I was a grad student and teaching a microbiology lab course with roughly 30 college sophomore students in it. The back story - I was a wee tiny bit overwhelmed with my life ... I was two months away from graduating, had broken up with my fiance over the weekend, moved into an apt that morning, and had been blasted by my PI for not having more done with my thesis/dissertation. The front of the classroom had this raised step area where my teaching materials sat on a large lab table/bench type thing with a white projector screen behind me. I was wearing my most favorite pair of red heels that were SUPER cute (think 1940's square heels, red patent leather with white pin stripes around the toe box) - anyway, I was up there teaching and explaining the lesson kick off ... when I stepped to the side. Fell off the stupid platform and broke the heel of my favorite shoe. I literally sat on the floor and proceeded to have a mental breakdown fall out cry - the kind where the snot pours and you just CAN'T stop. Yeah ... needless to say the coordinator for the labs had to finish teaching that day for me and I went home.

Chin up lady - things happen! It will get better for ya!

Thanks guys...you are probably right about the hormones...sometimes I get super emotional around that time of the month...sometimes worse than others. I just am embarrassed and feel bad because it isn't what I wanted or meant to do.I can totally understand crying over a melted chocolate Easter bunny, haha. Thanks for the tip about looking up. I'll definitely be trying that if I need to. :)

I don't have any advice but I'll add my embarrassing story to the list.

This weekend I was at a horse show to see my boyfriend. His job took him about 500 miles away and things have been very rough for us lately learning how to cope with distance, etc. Anyways his mom was there as well (she shows) and as soon as I saw him I literally burst into tears in the middle of the barn isle surrounded by clients and trainers and everybody he works with plus his MOM. I just couldn't stop crying for about an hour after that I had to leave. I don't even have a good reason as to why, I guess all the stress of the last couple weeks caught up with me.

You're definitely not the only one who is besieged by random crying

Have to say we have probably all been there one time or another! You never know what triggers that point of no return. Usually for me its something so stupid!
