I haven't been on much lately, so I'm sorry if I've missed any recent posts.
My mare is really struggling in this heat! She was panting and lethargic yesterday.  I cold-hosed her for 20 minutes and her temp was 101.5 (didn't take it before hosing).
I called the vet and she suspects anhidrosis She told me to order supplements and give her shade and water and hose her off often.
At midnight, her respiration was still 50+/minute but her temp was 99.5. I hosed her again and gave her a dose of electrolytes.
She is turned out with plenty of access to shade. I do not have a barn (just run-in shed).
What else can I do? When do you worry?
I'm thinking about taking her to a friends barn, but not sure if that will help?

I kept mine in a stall with a covered run, he had fans on him too. I've tried all sorts of supplements, patches, beer, coffee grounds and nothing really worked. Until..... we put him on a thyroid medication to help with his weight, we noticed that next summer that he was sweating. It was a total accident that we found out that this helped him! He has been sweating for the last 3 summers now. Not saying it will help your horse, but you might want to ask your vet about it. So sorry you are going through this, its a tough thing to deal with!

I've had 2, One AC worked for one, she sweated about 75% of what she should, under fans during the day, out at night.  My other quit sweating in August, one ac didn't help him, vet told me to try a dark ale beer and the next day he was back to a full sweat.  Keep them out of the heat.

I have a gelding that suffers from Anhidrosis.  So far this year he's sweating normally because of the high humidity. It's the dry heat that affects him.  When he starts to suffer I stall him during the day with fans and still do what old trainers have done for years he gets a beer in his feed.  I've tried the drugs they have no affect on him.

I've had the pleasure of owning 2 in Texas! One ac helped one, but nothing helped the other. Out of desperation I tried accupucture. It worked!!! At the time the only vet I could find that did it was at esms in Weatherford, Tx, that was probably 6-7 years ago. There are probably vets now that do accupucture. He slowly started swetting again within 3 days of the treatment he was fine-could be out and compete in the summer.

This recipe hasn't failed yet. I have used it on several non sweaters and haven't had it fail yet. Usually it will take a a few days to a week to start seeing results. It's been a lot more effective than any other supp.

1 TBS lite salt
1 TBS regular salt

Add to feed twice per day

Reduce to once or day when they start sweating normally

ETA

It's a very serious problem and can be life threatening. I would keep her under fans and give a bath with 1 pint of alcohol added to a bucket of water (sponge on) probably 3 x per day.

****Whenever you wet her down, be sure to scrape off excess water. If you leave water on without scraping it off it acts as an insulator and will make her hotter.

Dark beer on their feed twice a day. And my vet told me to get on very early one morning while it was cool and alternate between trotting and walking until he would finally break a sweat after about a week of the beer. I would trot until he was breathing good and then walk.

After about the fourth rotation of that trot/walk he broke a full out sweat. I cooled him out well and it was like he was high for a few hours. It was all teh stuff built up releasing but after that he was fine. I kept him on the beer for another two weeks and then weaned him off. (But he LOVED the beer cracking each morning!)

EOC -Equine Omega Complete, they have 3 versions of the oil, regular, mega sweat and mega gain. The regular Complete fixed my non sweater black . We my daughter's retired mare at a friends house due to non sweating so I got onto the Omega oil .
He has two fans in his stall runout , flysheet , mask and shoofly leggings , 2 pails water and then lots trees in his pasture and water trough out there too. He rips his shoes off if I let him into the pasture w pond. He parks in front of the fans. Not all fans have enough power , oh And I also have a fibreglass roofed trailer ..huge difference.

Sweat! Sweat! We have sweat! Thank you, God!
What a long, trying day. Her temp stayed around 102. As soon as we stopped hosing, she would start panting. I put fans in her run-in shed and went to the kiddos ball games. Just got home and she in drenched!!! Oh, I hope it lasts!!!
Should I go ahead with supplement?
Thank you for all of the advice!!!

I think you are a worry wart .. lol You never mentioned her not sweating in your post just a vet on the phone fishing for a common hot weather answer...

Leave her out and keep your feeding program normal and I add a handful of loose ADM StrongGrow mineral for salt and mineral loss during hot weather.
This is my electrolyte shake .. they eat what they want and lip around what
they don't want ..

A horse will find a cool place if they want to ... mine will find a sandy roll spot
and lay flat out like they are dead in a scorching heat ... I just ignore them unless they show salty spots from sweat and give them a hosing making sure I sweat stick them off so the water does not become a hot "winter" coat from the sun heat ...

Next stage is losing weight and showing some ribs due to normal summertime stress ... especially broodmares with a baby by their sides ... step up your feeding program before they get this look because you can't play catch up once you let the weight loss show up ... just don't founder your horse .... fat horses founder and sweat more than a skinny/slim looking horse .. same as people ... lol

Keep in mind .. horses are the only other animal other than humans that sweat to cool off ... you can feel the shade of a barn or tree but that does not change the air temperature ... desert states with low humidity will make a horse or human look like they are not sweating but your intake of water and salt/minerals need to increase or become dehydrated ... humidity over 50% will have a horse dripping sweat at 90* and above ... so use some common sense and treat them like you do yourself... give them a water bottle to carry around .. lol

My vet had me give one I had dark draft Shiner Bock beer. At first gave him one morning and night. Poured it right on his feed and he loved it. LOL It took about a week and he began sweating again, but in the flanks at first, then shoulders and the rest of his body by then end of 2 weeks. He got hosed off several times a day but don't just hose them down, my vet said to be sure to scrape excess water off of them if they were outside. He was under fans too. He only did it that one summer and never again.
