A horse with heart, or a horse with The Athletic Ability?

A non-talented horse that tries for you will be way more fun and less frustrating than a pea-hearted puke with the talent to win the world when they're in the mood.

Heart.

I have both right now. . . one that gives 110% but can't clock in the 1D, and another that is the most talented, athletic horse I've rode, but getting the puzzle to fit together is a lot of work.

And then there are the freaks of nature who are talented/athletic and have heart. . . but of course not easy to come by.

Heart FOR SURE. I don't like Puzzles and the heartache of having one so talented that just doesn't want to do it. lol Thats why a LOT of NFR horses are pretty average at the big jackpots. Many of them don't go win big jackpots, but they can stand up on any type of ground, atmosphere, etc.

In a perfect world one with both! In the end, it's heart that wins. I had a horse that was SO talented, but couldn't take the pressure of competition - would smoke runs in practice and run up the fence even in a time only. I will take my slow little reining horse with navicular that would give everything he had everytime he ran regardless of what he was dealing with (I had to retire him because I knew he would run on 2 legs if he could). He made it fun.

Athletic ability. A good trainer can bring out and develop heart.

My little mare has more try than any other horse I've ever ridden. I'm having a blast, and given that if I come out of the house with a saddle, she can be on the back fence and meet me at the gate, I'd say she's having a pretty good time too. Even if she turns out to be nothing more than a middle of the pack play day horse, I'm not going to regret a moment of the money time and effort it's taking to get her there. She's lovely.

Way more fun with one that WANTS to, as oppose to making one enjoy it.

Heart all the way. I've seen some really nice horses that were bred for speed or pleasure and made wonderful horses in other arena's from what their intended breeding was. And it was because they loved doing something else. When I was boarding 20 some years ago a lady that boarded at the same place had a really nice pleasure gelding. He was bred to run, but he loved the pleasure pen. You can make a horse do what you are asking and be pretty good at it, but you can't make them love it.

I have a friend who described her mare as one with heart over ability. That poor horse has no idea where it's feet are half the time and trips on flat surfaces. But she tries. And to my friend that's all that matters. She laughs at her when she trips.

I myself would rather have one with talent first. The heart can be found later by someone willing to listen.

Not always. We had a very talented mare. She did good in the beginning, but we worked cattle on her for a while and then went back to barrels. She would do something wrong on the pattern every time. We took her to the vet, nothing. Checked her equipment, nothing. Work her on cattle and she would work so hard to do the right thing. Put on her on barrels and she would work so hard on NOT doing the right thing.
We learned our lesson - she was a COWHORSE, not a barrelhorse, thank you very much!

Depends on the degree. I'd personally rather have on that can clock with huge mistakes due to raw talent than I would one that can't scatter his own crap because he's so slow but tries.

Barrel racing is a timed event after all.

Heart. You can work and train one to achieve a certain level of ability. You can't put an ounce of heart in one that has none.

Heart. A horse can have all the athletic ability in the world and still suck at his job. A horse MUST have heart to be great at their job.

I enjoyed reading all of these responses the reason I posted is because I was in deep thought today thinking about the two GRADE Heinz 57 mares I've started that had more heart then any horses I've ridden as opposed to the papered expensive prospects I've bought and started who didn't have the drive but most certainly had the talent (and most of them were geldings, except one mare)

I do have one gelding out there that I run from time to time for tuning that has indeed developed the heart for it and never had it before, I think he just figured out he can run too, so maybe it's a mare Vs gelding thing?

My gelding is slower to catch on right now, super athletic and talented but lacks the ambition, could be he still needs to learn to run too but I feel like the mare I'm riding really wants it!
