Be aggressive.
From my experience You have to jockey a ratey horse & stay out of their way all at the same time.
I run my mare in a sweet six with a chain mouth piece but could run her with a piece of baling twine she's so broke. I push her as hard as I can to each barrel and have to hold my outside rein a little to 2nd or she's gonna hit it.
I didn't read all your details how you exercise, or if you work him on the pattern outside of competition just sharing my opinion. If they are patterned around my place when they prove that they will hunt the barrel I don't work Barrels at home, This mare in particular was on the pattern 5 months & i stopped EXH her b/c she would anticipate that turn & didn't wait for me. I don't tune on them unless there's a problem
(kinda like beating a dead horse lol
)
Things I do to keep my mare freed up, I swim her. Lope/long trot big circles during the week, I breeze her. and the only time she see's a barrel is headed down the alley way for a run no matter if its a new pen or not. It helped her a lot & she really hunts the barrels.
Not sure if it will help, just thought i would share my experience.
