I did BFA futurities with Xena. In October, before her first futurity in December, she was finally allowed to run home. Not between the barrels yet, but at least we knew what kind of runner we were working with. She got two more weeks of barrel work and then came home to swim for two weeks before her debut. Dec 5 of that year was her first RUN, ever. She'd never run to the first barrel, or to the third. She had been run between 1st and 2nd. Her first out was a 1D run, .2 off the winning run. We did see many holes she needed to work on, and it showed how fragile her mind was still when it came to handling those fast moving feet.
If you are high loping now, I would advance to pushing to a particular barrel on a few exhibition runs. See if any big holes open up, and see how your horse handles the added speed.
