The first step is to research the issues independently of any candidate, from multiple news sources. I do not watch the news on TV. Most of it is worthless. I get almost all my info from various sources online that I've found and trust. Cross checking multiple sources is necessary. You want to have a background knowledge before any candidate starts speaking, so you know what's reasonable and what's BS. For example, Hillary trying to explain how raising taxes would stimulate the economy or Trump trying to justify "stop and frisk" or explaining how tarriffs would somehow help us rather than cause a depression again.
I like to listen to the candidates and see how what they say compares to what I know to be true through research and what their party platform is. The VAST majority of republicans only adhere to the platform they say represents them a small amount of the time, when it is convenient.
Another reliable test is isidewith.com, as others have mentioned. Make sure you answer ALL the questions though, as this will affect the outcome. And it is still just a computer test so it isn't 100% perfect. I'd say it is very good though. I sided 94% with Austin Petersen, 90-something % with Cruz, and 90-80% with 3 other libertarians including Gary Johnson. I'd say this is accurate considering I am an ex-republican that, as I got more involved in politics, actually going to state conventions, local meetings, talking with party officials and canidates 1 on 1, etc. saw the light and became a Libertarian.
