crossarrowk - 2013-12-05 8:14 AM One thought, If you feed bermuda (we do), make sure that you dont have a layer of the "fines", small particles, left over in the bottom of your feeder.  Always dump them out. If you are late feeding one day, or some other scenario where the horse decides to tank up on the "fines', that will for sure compact in the gut. Never feed just the "fines" for a treat or to save hay.  

Our horses wont eat the fines- lol. We have to recycle them to the steers. I think along the lines of what Anne Marie said- if you can offer a slow feeding soloution I think you should be fine. Or mix it with a long stem grass. Main thing is horses that drink-hay or grain will impact if they are not properly hydrated and winter is the worst. Provide WARM water if at all possible and by warm I mean- not frozen with ice pieces in it, not really warm to temp. Give them salt to keep them drinking year round. But I know I am preaching to the choir.

THanks for all the advice. I have actually taught my horses to dunk their hay in Water when they eat it. Really helps with keeping moisture in the gut. I actually just provide a bucket of warm water next to the hay feeder and they all do it. Salt of course in front of them 24/7 and electrolytes fed once daily. For now I will just stick with my feeding program, I think the only bermuda I can get here is the real fine stemmed stuff.
