I like those papers, I see more I recognize further back but this horse should be athletic and quick.
I have always been the odd man out on this board about cow horses vs running bred. But I have also seen many cow horses win on a national level so I don't believe a horse has to be bred to run in order to be higher in the D's. Finding a true 1D caliber horse is next to impossible and such a gamble. But if you are looking for a horse with 2D/3D potential then I don't see why this horse shouldn't fit the bill especially if built right and broke nice.
My advice, find a horse that suits your needs and that works for you without too much emphasis on bloodlines. A lot of people have a hard time riding a running bred horse and their style is much more complimentary on a cow horse or vice versa. My current gelding is 2D/3D and is bred for western pleasure/hunt seat. But our styles and personalities work well together which matters more than anything.
I agree with this 100%. My current gelding is a solid 2D horse, and is grade. We owned his dam
(registered AQHA
) and I have a copy of his sire's APHA papers, but there's nothing anyone would recognize on either side. Maybe he was just a fluke, but I wouldn't discount this horse's potential based on his papers. I wouldn't expect him to be a 1D horse at big shows, but if he's put together nice and has a good handle on him, he should certainly have at least the potential to be a 2D/3D horse. And if he turns out to be another 4D horse, I would think he'd be an easy sale if he's good looking and nice to be around.

Thanks very much for all the input. I try to give horses the benefit of the doubt, as there ARE a lot of nice horses out there that their papers aren't name brand.
I can't post pics of this horse, because she isn't mine
(I'm supposed to look at her Wednesday night at a barrel race
), but from the pics I've seen she's nice looking!
