I hate feeding horses. It should be easy but it's not. There is to much marketing in feed and not enough product. I'm feeding the plain safe choice at the moment. I don't think it's the best feed there is. I don't mind it but I am trying TE I don't like the price of it either. I have one that has colicked on me twice now. But I don;t think the feed was the issue. I would like to feed cheaper!!!but better. The way the bags are designed now I think more money goes into them than the product. I heard the oats were hard on ulcers? I dunno what to do anymore. The more I read the more my head swims. I don't grain one of mine because he's obese. Probably has something wrong with him knowing my luck
(he does look pretty healthy though
) The one I do grain needs more than hay it seems. We feed a really good hay of Alf/orchard grass. He eats a lot and fills in before his girth but his topline isn't where I would like it.
For the overweight horse, a ration balancer would be awesome. I feed Triple Crown 30% to two of my mares. They are FAT on just 2lbs of it a day along with free choice grass hay. It is a concentrated feed, so it has everything a horse needs in a very small amount. It also has things other companies don't add, like all the essential amino acids, biotin, pre/probiotics and more. Don't be alarmed by the price per bag. You only use 1-2lbs A DAY, so it last a whole lot longer than other feeds.
For the harder keepers, I feed Triple Crown Senior. 10% fat, 17% fiber, and VERY low starch/sugar. I am terrified of ulcers, so I go with the lowest starch content possible, while still having a good fatty feed. My 11 year old gelding gets just Senior and so does my 2 year old colt. They both look great on it.
I feed 6lbs of TC Senior to them a day along with free choice grass hay. LOVE the stuff.
And yes, oats are NOT good for ulcer prone horses. They are very high in starch.

I yet again agree about the ulcer but what was fed to the horse that caused the ulcer's ? probably not whole oats. and again the there different types of starch for example
( I lived on a vets ranch and took care of her 7 show hoses this is where I got my info and she did live blood analysis for Purina feed event though she did tell what they wanted to here
) the corn filler is different type of starch and 71% of corn is starch and only 71% of that is digestible while whole oats are 53% starch but 83.5% of that starch is digestible. also whole oats contain 53% starch, 12% protein, 5% fat and 12% fiber. this some thing I learn about and researched and found which made since that if you can match the diet to what an animal would find in the wild there is way less issues with health. below is one article among many about it.
