I am skeptical with every horse I look at. First off, I don't want to get screwed, so I read every ad and look for any red flags that come up. Some horses, many horses, are represented accurately and appropriately. But there's definitely some who are for sale and you know theres got to be more to the story...there's a reason people say buyer beware. I'm sure y'all have seen the funny FB posts about the horse for sale ads and the "read between the lines" meaning of the catch phrases and gimmicks. And I'm also sure everyone at some point has come across a horse for sale that's local that everyone in the area knows is crazy but its on the internet for sale with a great ad description LOL.

I also have to be skeptical because its my job. I have to pre purchase horses and I need to look over them with a fine toothed comb and make sure nothing slips past me. It's nerve-wracking. So I guess in a way maybe I'm hyper sensitive to trying to find issues because the #1 reason why vets get sued is over PPEs.

we're old and now on the selling end :)  These are what we considered to be the 'best' and have held onto for a long time.  It's not true that people just sell the ones they have trouble with.   I have a 2 yr old filly getting ready to be started.  She is so much like Slim it's scary.  We'll start her and then hang onto her but there will come a time when she's sold as we get even older LOL  We've bought lots of horses over the years and have always done our homework.  Honestly, never had a vet check done on one, but have dealt with reputable breeders whose word and handshake is worth more than any contract.  Just do your homework when you're buying!

that is why there are PPE, and you should try to ride the horse before you buy it. Unfortunately, not everyone is/will be honest about a horse they are selling. If you find one that is, that is a godsend lol

Yes. Try to ride it at a barrel race. Where you have a vet pull blood for a drug test. An honest seller won't mind and won't get insulted. If they act all offended, red flag!
