I’m dealing with this same issue right now. Been battling scratches all summer and doing ok with topicals until one of my filly came in with her hind leg all swollen and tender. Fever and lame vet treated with excede and we’ve been giving IV banamine and have her penned. No fever today on day 3 and swelling is better as well as lameness. Never dealt with it like this before always been just scabs and managed wth topical sprays and shampoos.

I have a retired horse that gets it BAD on his nose to where he can't eat if left untreated. It looks like a bad sunburn, with peeling and deep cracks. I use the blue A&D ointment that treats diaper rash. No smell and it clears it up fast!

I have a gelding that will develop scratches every year. I have tried many things... The best thing I did for him this year was put diaper cream on the affected area. Easy, effective, economical. Even though the scratches have healed I continue to apply the diaper cream daily to prevent a flare up.
