BARRELHORSE USA - 2014-02-23 12:49 AM Pretend you are pregnant and your horse wanted to ride you for months while carrying a child .... just how much and how hard would you want to be forced to work during that time frame ... lol I have not seen one pregnant woman competing at the Olympics ... have you??
Exactly!!!! I have a whole new respect for the mares after I had our son ... I dont ride preggo mares!
Chelsea I had no clue you had a baby! Congrats!

Many LFGs will be voided if you ride a pregnant mare.
We have run one until she was 3.5m preg, but it was a unique situation. I wouldn't do it in 99% of the cases.

I have seen it done in the past, but that was mostly before ET became available. Now I would think it would be worth it to ET rather than risk the health of the mare or colt she is packing, although I dont see a problem ridding one making runs and traveling there is always a risk of injury or illness.

We had a 1D mare that was as gritty as they come. We bred her to zippy zevi dasher who isn't a cheap stud fee and ran our mare until she was 8 months. It was causing her more stress staying home when the others were gone to the barrel races. She was my husbands horse at the time and our vet recommended that since he and her had such a crazy regiment that I run her instead. My husband and this mare did everything wide open , she was the type that was on the muscle when she woke up in the morning till she fell asleep at night and he lived for her crazy unpredictable ways. In the pen it was all business and pay checks for the duo. Once she was pregnant and I stared to run her she relaxed and became a 2D horse. She had a healthy baby and at 15 days after I stared to bring her back with baby at her side , started hauling her and baby at 45,days and winning the 1D with me aboard and my husband babysitting. Lol.
This may not work for everyone but I think it depends on the mare and your situation. Just the change in jockey's on her and elevating the stress of her knowing the trailer was leaving without her I believe was better for her than a lay off.
Only you know what's right for your horse we can only give you our opinions and experiences. Good luck and pay attention to your mare she will tell you what the right thing to do is for your situation.
