skeeter7 - 2015-11-25 7:19 AM Oh sweet mother of Mary we've had a breakthru!!  I went to a friend's last night who has a zillion bits to try some options and figure out what may or may not work. I also asked her to watch me take him thru a set as I typically ride alone and I have failed to have anyone video me when I have expo'd him to see if she could shed a little light on what I was feeling when riding him. He was loose and sloppy in the back end. He would commit to the turn but then just didnt really dig in underneath and snap so we tried a few bits to see what we could find to help him accomplish that. He needed to elevate his head just a smidge to be able to get that hind leg up underneath him a little better and really dig. This bit wont be the fix all but it will help teach him to drive up under himself a little better and utilize his body better. I worked him thru a set and I finally felt that snap you should feel behind a barrel. It was like Christmas for me! Yay! I knew he had it in him. I feel like we are progressing in the right direction now.

This is my favorite type of bit!!!!!

I'm super curious; why is this your favorite type of bit? I mean I understand the mechanics with a chain bit and I understand a ported bit but I'm confused on how it works when they're together?

My horse prefers a ported mouthpiece.  This type of bit will elevate the shoulders, but still give you flex with the chain on either side.  I'm wanting the Ed Wright ported chain pretzel bit!!

My daughter's mare is really light and we struggled with the same issue. We were running her in a Sharon Camarillo tender touch but swithched to a hack and really helped stiffen her up. We encountered another issue as she started running harder. Shes a push style, naturally runs with her head low and as she's running harder she's not getting up under herself when going into first. We put a ported bit on her to help elevate her in the front end.

It is my understanding that the ported chain mouth bit gives some tongue relief while giving you lift to help keep that front end elevated.
