The first barrel horse I had I ended up running her in a low port swivel bit; pretty high strung horse and had a higher head set. The next two horses that I trained in barrels I ended up riding them in Jim Warner hackamores; both were paints (funny enough) and had about medium level of go and medium headset. Now the horse I'm riding right now I actually have to run him in a Molly Powell "First Barrel" bit. I tried so long not to go to a "bigger bit" but oddly enough he loves it; no head shaking, no gaping mouth, not too sensitive, and I can be sooo much lighter with my hands. Out on trail I can just use any other type of bit with him and he's usually happy.
I think with me I used to be more of a hack type of girl but I don't think I have quite developed my own style yet.

I have a knack for running almost anything in a Jim Warner hack. I think I've run 8 different horses in a JW and it has worked on all of them. That hack obviously fits my hands. It works for me on reallly setty horses and also fairly free runners.

For everyday riding I love an Argentine snaffle. Always works just right, and on every horse I ride. I think it allows me to be super light and still have good control.

I love how my horses feel in a chain mouth peice.

Me too!! I love tuning the mare I have now, and also a handful of horses I've had before in a chain mouth. I usually don't run in them though.
