BamaCanChaser - 2017-02-15 10:24 AM I love my Tod Slones. I thought about switching to 5 Star, because of all the excellent reviews, but I haven't been able to find a person who can tell me the difference between a Slone and a 5 Star. The price difference between the 2 for a basic no frills pad is $50. I think they are both very good quality, and that you are paying more for the available upgrade options that 5 Star offers. And they obviously market their products very well.
I guess you haven't talked to the right person then!
The simple difference is that 5 Stars are the only felted wool pad with as close to 100% virgin wool as you can get in them
(92-98% and balance being reworked
(used
) wool
) - and are rated as F10 & F11 - while the Slones have only 55% virgin wool, with 45% reworked wool and synthetic materials and rated at F15. International Felting Standards show that the F11 felted wool has a compression rating of 6 psi & 200 psi tensile strength
(pounds per square inch
) and F15's compression rating of 2 psi and 75 psi tensile strength.
(So 5 Stars have a much higher compression/concussion rating
). Also based on research from the Felt Mfg'ers Council of America, the higher the virgin wool content of the wool felt, the better the wicking ability.
The much higher concentration of the virgin wool is what "creates" the higher pricing if they are higher than the Slones - I've not checked in awhile so can't personally comment on that. I do believe you can only get the gray and black with Slones, while you have a wide range of colors & options from 5 Star.
If I can help anyone with any questions about 5 Stars, or if you are wanting to order, I am 5 Star's designated BHW dealer too.
Thank you! I have asked and asked and no one has been able to provide that information including several other 5Star dealers!
You are very welcome! Unfortunately, I have heard that way too much. :
( I have been a dealer for them for many many years. If you have any questions, please let me know.

5 star all the way! Super soft and conforms to the horse right from the start! No breaking them in! We have a really wide backed mare and every saddle/saddle pad combo we tried rolled on her except the 5 star.
We used to use a best ever and had to put a mesh grip pad under it. I've been riding her at home with the 5-star and ran her a few times in it and no slips! They are awesome!

Saddleright Pads. They ONLY pad on the market with a LIFETIME warranty to not compress and breakdown. Designed by a Chiropractor to help promote and keep the horses back healthy. 30 day no questions asked return policy. Thinner than most all pads on the market and better protection. They have been in production for over 30 years, with no changes,
(no need to!
) They also offer the "recover" program. Use that pad daily for years, decided you want a new one, just send in an order for your new one along along with a payment for %50 of the pad of your choosing. When you get your new one, ship that old one back in the box provided. REGARDLESS of it's condition or age!
