I had it in my right hand and when I went for my saddle horn at the 2nd barrel, totally missed it!! He went one way and I went the other! Almost ate dirt!!
Don't have a pic right now, but what I do is put a hair elastic (like you use to tie your hair in a ponytail) on the handle. It is wrapped 3 times around to keep it secure enough to not slide off. Then I just grab my whip like normal, and I put my thumb through the elastic. That way I have it right there, and it won't fall. The best thing is that I don't even notice it is there. |

Location: Probably On the Road to the Next Barrel Race! | Three*C*Champs - 2014-04-01 5:09 PM I use to run with one on the mare I sold. Rubber banded the handle acrossed my palm, never had an issue.
Yup, ran this way for 30 years, never had a problem...UNTIL!!! last year, the whip got between my hand and the saddle horn, so I couldn't grab my horn when my horse sat for turn...came really close to falling off at warp speed, haven't used that whip since! But somebody posted about putting elastic just on thumb, i'll have to try that :) |

Location: So. Cali. | Went home and snapped some pics for those who asked. Hope this works. It looks like it could get in the way or hung up, but I never had much issue with it. Most the time I was just trying to keep my butt in the saddle on this particular horse.
ETA: I generally did not put it on like this until right before my run, and had a newer hair tye that I used so it would be on the tighter side. I pop these hair tyes putting them in my hair half the time, so I think it wouldve broke easy if there was a situation I needed it to

Location: So. Cali. | CanCan - 2014-04-02 6:57 PM I tried it. My gelding panicked during the run if he could see the stick in my hand. Totally lost focus. I've ridden mares that it didn't bother.
I did try it first in my backyard to see how my mare would react becuz she was on the spookier side. She was ok with it, but good to test out first. I dont blame some for seeing that from the corner of their eye while turning a barrel and getting a bit spooky |

Location: CTX | This is how I have it on my thumb. And it has not ever been in the way of grabbing the horn like this.
