I know a few girls who have had their horses stolen while tied. They had panels around them as well. Tying to the trailer always makes me nervous...

I have used the HiTie for years. I love them. I hauled a lot in 2013 and kept horses on it for days at a time. Never had an issue. My horses are really good minded so they can get in a bit of a bind without panicing. My younger horse always seems to get a leg over the bunge, but he just sits there until I unsnap it. I have NO IDEA how he gets it done. I just clip it to the top of his halter now so he can't get that leg over it.
The HiTie is easy to install as well. Good luck!

Going along with the tying theme - nylon halter or leather/breakaway? Is it better for them to get loose if in a jam or to hurt themselves and struggle?

I use a breakaway halter on everything.

I think it would be just as easy or easier for someone to steal horses from their stalls then from tied to a trailer. Were these girls staying in their trailer? I know I can hear every little noise outside even when the generator is running.
