Just make your water at home stink by using Gatorade, kool aid or whatever ... then use the same to cover up the smell of strange water on the road ..... iron in drinking water is the biggest stinker that horses refuse ... it is more the stink of the water horses refuse versus how it tastes ...

BUT NEVER DIP WATER OUT OF OR LET YOUR HORSE DRINK IN A COMMON WATER TROUGH WHICH ARE FULL OF DISEASES ...

I have used this type of tanks for years and they are stackable and price will not break the bank .. and the design is very well done .... to sanitize ... just add a half cup of bleach to half a tank of water and shake around and then rinse very well and you are ready to go ... a lot of RV places carry similar that are for potable water use .....>>>>

I was raised to never let my horse drink out of another persons water bucket where I was unsure about their water or any animals that had been in the water, that I am very careful of.

We're working on getting a water container, it's just if I for some reason stay somewhere and run out of water, I'm gonna need her to drink other water.

One of my mares won't drink on the road no matter if I bring my own water. I've learned to carry electrolytes with me and give them to her. I use OTC Jug and just give her a couple lines on the plunger (can't remember how much that is). Usually she'll drink within a couple hours. I've never had a problem with her since I started using that.

She drinks our water or water that tastes/smells familiar on the road well, it's just when water is unfamiliar. We joked that if we ran out of water we'd run into town and buy her bottled water....

I know salt makes you thirsty, but doesn't it dehydrate a little as well? (My brain might be thinking wrong) I just don't want to dehydrate a horse more than they already are...

We keep hydration hay on our trailer at all times.  it is a large cube of hay that up put in a bucket of water it soaks up the water and  depending on how much water u put in the bucet it can be kinda soupy.  we have found that once our horses eat/drink a bucket of this they happily from then on drnk the water.  We travel alot and never know if we will have well water, fresh water or city water.  Our horses are usually pretty good but something about Kansas water they do not like. We have bailed out many a friend when their horses wouldnt drink with a hydration hay block.  THey are different from cubes as i have used both.  these provide more liquid and dissolve so much faster.  You can go online and google purina hydration hay for $10 off coupons.
