sassy&tessa - 2014-01-02 10:41 AM lol-I called Direct TV. We had a bigger package so I could have GAC for the NFR (and by the way, I would still need that package for CBSSprotsnetwork for this year's NFR) but we don't need it.  So I called and told them I wanted their basic package and asked if they would give me a discount.  And he did-an additiona $15 a month off.

Got home, turned on the TV and realized my version of basic was not their version of basic.  I wanted the one with 140 channels, not 55!!!  They still gave me a good deal and they were super nice to work with.  Big oops on my part.

Question though-for those who have farm bureau insurance, have you foind any ways for them to find cost reducers for your policies?  We insure everything through them.  They said they can't reduce our rate anymore on our cars, which is fine-I think it is reasonable.  But I didn't know about the home.  They are checking on it right now.

We live in Texas.

eta: I also wanted to thank FC for this thread.  We reduced our cable, electricity, and hopefully home owners by just having a reminder.  And I have my husband finally jump started to sell that 5th wheel.
I recently shopped our insurance, Farm Bureau was significantly cheaper than any of our other options and also had better coverage.

I don't think we are going to do better.  I asked our insurance agent to just check but I think we get a great deal and our coverage is really good.  But it never hurts to ask!!

I was amazed when I read an article giving pointers on how to save on electricity.

NUMBER one was unplug all clocks and or radios.

As much as I hate them L.E.D bulbs.

Call and see if you can go flat rate, they will average out your annual useage and you pay that flat rate. For us it works great, no winter spikes.

No billing or receipts they call it paperless, do everything auto, they will normally give you a $10. 00 credit per month?

Call other electric companies and see if they can do better for you than who you are with.

If it has an on off button unplug them.  They eat electricity just being plugged in.

These are just a few things we did.

Basically what FC said.  Honestly we could do better about plugging and unplugging thigns and if I tried really hard to make it a habit I could.

But I did it the other way.  I had locked my rate in earlier in the year and now it is much lower.  So I re-locked it and will get a reduction of about 30% by just doing that.  I decided to lock in for 12 months so it is fixed.  I also went to paperless (why we weren't already I have no idea) and auto pay and we got a further reduction in our rate by doing that. Our cost savings *should* be about 40%. I will know with my next bill.

I probably should have shopped the rate but I didn't.  My need for wanting to save only goes so far and things have cranked up here at work.
