| to the OP:
AQHA has many hardship alternatives in helping to regain registration and identify horses ...
1.) Get mailing address of current owner shown by AQHA ... you don't care how long ago it was .. this is one that has to say ... I lost the papers or dog ate papers and make a request for duplicates and sign a transfer slip ......... so don't confuse things with AQHA and blabber about the brand inspection etc etc ... you might contact him to see if he ever had the papers which he must have or he would not know the tattoo number ...
get the previous owners address from AQHA and send a letter to the current owner and make it simple for them .... get any forms needed from AQHA, include a transfer slip with everything on it except sellers signature, provide a SASE and tell them you will pay all costs .... IF NO ANSWER .... send 2nd letter with all the above certified and return receipt requested
EDITED TO SAY: If this current owner shown by AQHA is deceased ... do not tell AQHA ... they will want death certificates, the will, the probate, executor etc etc .... ask God to forgive you as you sign the transfer and request for duplicate copy and send it in to AQHA ... lol
2.) Ask AQHA rep if they will stick with you and be the one to process the data in the file to get him re registered ..
3.) AQHA will eventually send a letter of their own etc etc and then tell you the cost and they need 5 pictures, a new DNA and xxx amount of dollars ...
4.) Always be nice, respectful and whine a lot .... AQHA is interested in making money and will do about anything to get some from you ...... FYI: right now they have a $20 transfer fee regardless how many transfers need to be made on a horse .. IN YOUR CASE ... STICK WITH THE ONE SHOWN AS OWNER UNLESS FORCED TO DO OTHERWISE
5.) Time is your best friend so ride it out and things will happen .. eventual costs will be <$350 ...
GOOD LUCK

| Take some the advice on my previous post but not the costs!!
AQHA has sure relaxed their duplicate certificate ($30) or replacement certificate ($10) since I had to do it when a brief case full of race horse papers were stolen out of the back seat while gassing up at a truck stop.
They wanted separate affidavit form, pictures, DNA and registration certificate ... everything had much higher fees than now .. it was a total PITA to get it all done to run at the next track ...
It is simple now ... and cheap ... AQHA membership, fees stated above and I think most of you will need to read the instructions carefully and start in reverse order by getting a signed transfer from current owner shown at AQHA and say you lost the certificate so you are in control of getting a certificate .... AND not have to depend on an uninterested previous owner with timely responses ...
Here is the AQHA FORM .... front and back ...
https://aqha.com/media/3128/duplicate-certificate-form-5-12-14.pdf
Looks like less than a $100 ... $30 duplicate, $40 AQHA membership, $20 transfer fee ...

| Had a similar situation and this is what I did.
I printed out the duplicate certificate request and a transfer off AQHA website. I filled out everything I could and highlighted the areas the owner on file needed to fill out. I mailed those two papers with 4 current photos (a photo of each side of the horse-must be clutter free, clear and show all markings) and a envelope addressed to the AQHA with a check for tha appropriate fees. This entire package was sent to the owners on file. They signed the highlighted areas, put the papers in the already addressed and stamped envelope to the AQHA and dropped it in the mail. I sent them a gift certificate to a nice restaurant for the favor and my papers arrived two weeks later! Good luck! I am very thankful it all went smooth!

Location: Oklahoma | I can tell you AQHA is 2-4 weeks from the day they receive the paperwork for processing of the transfer. I just talked to them about a transfer I need to do. |

Location: North Dakota | My experience with AQHA was MUCH better than the horror stories I've heard here! I have 4 head I transferred into my name-granted they all had bill of sale with current owner signature, however, one was 15 years ago! I filled out the paperwork sent the check and the previous owners had to sign a sheet or respond to an email.
Bottom line-I got the clearest information direct from AQHA, they've done this before and will tell you whether you have a chance of accomplishing your task or not with a quick phone call or two. |

Let me explain something to you. It is the seller's responsibility to transfer the horse's papers. If the seller has not complied with AQHA, they can be suspended. If a person , member or not, is suspended, they cannot race or compete in performance events. They cannot stand a stallion, breed a mare, register foals or have a horse transfered into their name. AQHA is cracking down on this practice because so many horses are sold and transfered years after they were sold. First of all, if I am looking at a horse and the paperwork is not in order I move on to the next horse. If I buy a horse that is sold as grade. I know it is grade and leave it at that. Papers are not going to make the horse run faster. If you want to verify this, get an AQHA handbook or call AQHA.
About 40 years ago, I bought a horse and transfered the horse immediately. I left out the date of sale. AQHA called the owner who in turn called me. She was not very happy because she showed a lot.
I think your being a little pessimistic! She is simply asking for information & a way to go about finding the information. She isn't (at least I didn't "get") that she was whining or etc. about it, just asking how you go about finding the info!
