If you use a hoof tester wrong, you can lame a horse... I can't understand why it took a vet with a hoof tester to tell you your horse was lame.

I took him to the vet because he was slightly off in his left front and when he tested him he was off in all 4 feet and he was uncomfortable standing on his rocky gravel road. Which I had not had him on a gravel road so he wasn't showing lameness.

Like I said... If you don't know how to use a hoof tester you can screw a horse's foot up pretty quick... I know farriers that don't know how to use one.... I can make a perfectly sound horse flinch with little or no effort.

oh, I see what you are saying... well he is a pretty old vet. I didn't know it was easy to make them appear lame. I agreed that his feet looked a little soft and they do appear harder now. I am thinking about walking him on my rocky road to see if he shows signs of being in pain. He was definitely uncomfortable standing on his rocky ground. just to see if his feet have toughened up at all. I am researching new vets.

If the horse has soft feet, which it sounds like yours does, PLEASE don't be walking him on rocks, gravel, etc, as this will cause him to bruise and bruising can make a horse sore.

Bruising can also turn into an abscess

Bruising can also take months to come out

As already said if the horse has pedal pulses in all four feet, the vet should have administered an antiinflammatory and directed you to continue an antiinflammatory for min a week.

Please go find a vet who specializes in lameness

Causes of the laminitis,

Grass,
Sepsis
Pssm
Cushings (if your horse is an easy keeper it is a possibility)
Concussion
Stress
Colic
Certain viral infections such as sleeping sickness

If left untreated the horse could founder then you have a lifelong issue to deal with
