Saw a picture of the break from the gate on FB - Matterhorn broke to the right and stepped on his front left heel bulb. Owie! Max probably would have thrown himself on the ground and waved his hoof in the air - what heart he had to race the way he did.

How do they know another horse stepped on him? I think it looks more like a over-reach. Especially with it on the inside of the front heel. Be pretty hard for another horse to reach around his leg to clip him on the inside. However he sustained the injury, those are a painfull injury and very well could have played a part in his lack of his usual form.

It definitely is one heck of an injury. I'd say a tie for fourth with a chunk taken out of your heel is pretty admirable. He had the heart to win it, that's for sure :
