I'm going on year # 2~ to get him rating, after being on the track..
IMO it would "undo" all the slow work I've put into him, and for what. ..
Again.. just my opinion...............

| I wouldn't enter my mare because she has enough soundness issues now, and she isn't extremely fast, but I would LOVE to watch. We were going to go to this one until we realized it was a 6 hour drive one way. We will just watch the videos that pop up. haha |

Location: Home....Smiling M Farms | I think it depends on the individual.
It would be good for one that rates way too much, that needs to be freed up. Nothing like a little competition to get them firing on all cylinders.
If I had one that was borderline a runaway....not so much. lol |

Location: MD | Love the idea of this and wish it was closer to me. I wouldn't do it if it was the beginning of the year though! I wouldn't mind going if it was any time past july. My horse needs some good outs to get his boogering out of the way for the year! :) |

| I think it would be a good way to breeze your horse and would get your horse to open up and run.
Would help open and free them up on the pattern.
Just my thoughts :) |

Location: WI | Yeah, I breeze my horse regularly - don't see how this is much different. I breezed him ONCE against another horse, and I might be scared to do it again. He was AAA off the track. |

Location: South Dakota | cyount2009 - 2015-05-18 5:19 PM I am probably going to be the only one here to say this but no, I would not enter my horse. There is a lot of risk involved in just running barrels, I wouldn't want to risk crippling my good horse on a straight stretch bragging contest. Maybe if I had something I really didn't feel was worth a whole lot but I knew could haul the mail, maybe then but probably not. I wouldn't want to even enter a young horse in this. Their minds are so fragile, why push anymore than you have to? Maybe I spent too long getting my horse off the track to where he could ride by another horse without getting chargy and strong or from grabbing his ass and trying to run every time something tried to pass him on the rail. ETA: I remember watching an interview with Sherry Cervi a while ago. She said when she was a kid she ran her pony all the time. Her dad finally told her that horses are like a pack of cigarettes. They only have some many runs before their gone. I would attribute this to that as well. For every time you run down that stretch, that is one run you burned up out of the "pack".
Totally agree, it's about the last thing I would do with my barrelhorse. I think roping, cutting, even putting on some English tack and do some jumping would be fun...but not racing hellbent down the track, just not worth it to me. |

I was going to say the exact same thing.
I breeze my horse once a week to keep his lungs in sprinting shape .... why would a race be any less safe than breezing your horse? I can totally understand if you don't want to do it on a horse that is a free-runner and borderline runaway; but I don't see it as any less safe than breezing.
I'll bet their track would be way better groomed than the 2 options I have for breezing at home! |
