Any good drills and exercises for horses who anticipate the turn but then hesitate behind the barrel when they get in too close? Hard to explain without video proof, but don't have a video to show. But said horse really anticipates the first barrel- not shoulder dropping at full speed anticipation but almost coming to a stop and hopping towards the barrel. Then after he gets in so close (normally hitting the barrel) he pulls off and hesitates before leaving the barrel. 2nd and 3rd are automatic and so quick. Any ideas? Been reading up on some drills from Kassie Mowry and others online, but didn't know if anyone else had any experience with something similar.

ETA- horse has been vet checked with no signs of injury, etc.

What I would try is counter arcs beside the barrel - counter arc away as you come into the pocket, then don't even turn the first, just go to the second barrel. Start at a walk, then build up to trot, lope, etc. I would not try to rate or stop at the barrel. You might try this also with a counter arc on the back side of the barrel at times. Just a suggestion - really need a video of what the horse does.

My young, ratey horse wanted to do something similar.  He almost wanted to bounce his front end around it and not move his rear much.  I lope to it and lope smallish circles around it until it's fluid, hip up under him, he's soft and correct.  Then tighten up comng out of it (sraight) and lope to the 2nd.  You can set up just one barrel and do it both ways or on the pattern.   I don't lope him in such a tight circle it's super hard, but I do want him to work at it some.

You might also check and make sure your saddle isn't pinching his shoulders?
