I had a PT mare, she's 8 now and never really took to the barrels.  Prime Talent is 15 this year, according to allbreedpedigree, his earliest foal crop are 9-year olds.  I haven't heard of any who have excelled in the barrel pen, but that's not saying there aren't any- I just haven't known any.
