Are you feeding their compressed bales or the chopped hay? If I was feeding the chopped hay, I would feed at least a 5 gallon bucket twice a day as it's not compacted like cubes. I have fed cubes as a sole source of forage and fed 2 gallons twice a day that I soaked and she stayed fat. With beet pulp, I fed a little less. They recommend 15-20 pounds per day of forage for an average 1,000 pound horse per day. I would feed a mix and not just straight alfalfa. I just started adding about 5 pounds of the Standlee compressed alfalfa hay 2 of mine that are hard keepers and not keen on cubes. I really like it but I definitely couldn't afford to feed it as a sole source of hay.
