Base/fill for arena

I bought 17 acres last year here in Kentucky. The highest spot on the property is where the house is, I'm wanting to put the arena next to the house. There was an old dried out pond there 100x200, we have brought in a dozer and grader and had it completely level but it's still at the bottom of a hill and I know I'm going to have to build it up to keep it from becoming flooded every time it rains.
( we are planning on putting in french drains once we have the base laid and it level with the house
)
So my question is, what have you used as fill and base for your arena?
I have access to all the wood chips in the world
(was thinking fill
) as well as lots of manure. Having it packed down to bring the ground level.
As far as a base, there are so many options one could spend forever weighing the options. Just curious as to what others have used and what has worked best for yall.

RE: Base/fill for arena
Wood chips, manure or any organic is a no no ... it slims over an area and contains water and is slicker than owl snot ...
Bring the dozer back in .. cut into a side hill and use that dirt to raise the level of the arena .... while dozer is there ... cut a big wide drainage ditch at the bottom of the side hill between it and the arena to direct any runoff away from and to keep it from flowing across the arena ... let the arena settle for several weeks ..
Now ... use 2"x 12 inch wide treated boards to go around the perimeter of your arena and bring in a sand and clay mix like they use for infields on baseball fields .. and level it inside the board perimeter ......... this clay sand mix will crust over slightly when it rains and will not wash away like pure sand does .... and does not contain enough red clay to be slick ...
Friends bought a road maintainer that works like magic and could be a fantastic arena leveler and you can adjust the teeth to barely loosen a couple of inches for impact control ... cost was under $1500 for the unit ... I think they bought it at J&I Industries at Madill Okla ...
works like this ... so look around and find one that works on your road and arena .. without breaking the bank ...

Totally agree. Make sure that your drains are approx 14" deep!
If your training lots of colts go easy on the top surface percentage of sand.
