Buying from Canada
I have found a horse that is what I am looking for but it is in Canada. I have never bought one from over the border so I am interesed in the cost to do so as far as ballpark brokerage fees, health certs, etc.? Does anyone know what the tax rate is to import a horse? I would have to have it shipped as it is a ways away so I can't do any of it myself.

Health and Coggins are typically between $150-300 CAD. It is totally dependent on the Vet and their fees to do it. The tax rate to import depends on if you are importing a mare, gelding, or stallion
(mare and studs are considered breeding imports
) and where you live. You can call the border crossing to find out the tax rate.
As for brokerage fees the shipping company you use will typically have a broker they use so you can get an idea of fees from calling them. What you may pay if you were to import may not be the same if the shipping company handles it.
Good luck.

The brokerage fees are a percentage of the value of the horse, plus there was a 200 initial fee when I went through a broker
(this was from USA into Canada
). When I used a broker for a 1800 usd horse including the initial fee it was still under 300.
The horse will need the health certification, coggins, and brand inspection.
For hauling Marc Roy he would be the one I would recommend, he does or used to do trips into the USA monthly so if the people don't mind holding onto the horse it may be cheaper for hauling.
