What do you expect your colts to do before you move them out of an O-ring?  What do you transition to?

I let the colt tell me when they're ready. I think all horses should be able to perform the fundamentals in a snaffle, if they can't, they're not ready to move on. But when you're getting to the point of a high lope or faster and asking them to do things like rate, pick their shoulders up, collect, etc, then most colts will need more help than an o-ring can provide. Some of them don't. Some are so soft and "feely" they can stay in a snaffle. Look at FWOTR, strong, hard running stud, still competing in only an o-ring.

Ask 10 different people what to transition to, you'll likely get 10 different answers. I think it's personal preference. But something with gag action and minimal curb action is easiest for them to adjust to when moving from an o-ring.

My colt was getting a little pushy and heavy with an o-ring. I switched him to a Goosetree simplicity smooth. He works well in it. I've also dabbled a little with him in a Molly Powell rookie bit smooth snaffle to get him used to curb pressure. I like the Goosetree better on still at this point.
