Location: Ellensburg, Washington		Any one ever heard of or had experience with Amyloidosis? The beginning of this year my gelding developed some growths on his sheath. They stayed pretty small until about a month ago.
I took him in thinking they were sarcoids. The vet took a biopsy to verify that they were sarcoids. Biopsy results came back and it is called amyloidosis which is rare in horses. Two vets (30+ years experience between the two of them) have never seen this befoe.
Apparently it is when the body deposits abnormal proteins in groups in the body. Not painful and not necessarily harmful unless they begin to deposit in heart or lungs. No treatment other than possibly steroids.
So far the only discomfort it is causing my horse is the one between his back legs that has gotten raw because it is constantly rubbed. I have been putting SWAT and ointment on it to keep as slippery as possible. Any help on reducing friction on that one would be great too!
Not a ton of research out there on this since it is rare in horses so I am looking to anyone out there that has experience, heard of, talked about, etc. Thanks!

Location: Texas		I have seen it in one horse when I was in vet school... his affected his airways and we almost lost him. He was a valuable stallion prospect and they wanted to show him but I know that didn't happen because we had to trach him so he could breathe.

It typically shows up in horses who have had a chronic infection or inflammatory disease.

I would think your horse would benefit from an anti-inflammatory and/or immune booster? Such as Cur-Ost?

It may keep you from relying on steroids which can have adverse side effects over time.
