Barnmom - 2015-11-18 8:46 AM Not saying not to try the blinkers, just be careful when you are in a crowded area because it really does take away a big portion of their vision.  Have you considered Reserpine? I know some people don't like to use drugs but this is a very good option to temper the fight or flight impulse.  I have had good luck using it on horses that were just super flighty and scared of everything, after about six months you can wean them off of it.Â
Yes. I was harsh. I'm not sure how to say this. Horses are inherently dangerous. God made things that eat meat at the same time She made things that ARE meat. Because of instinct, horses Know they ARE meat and there are lots of things in the world that like to eat horses...
People need to understand these facts. I LOVE people that say they have a "bomb-proof horse"... It's bomb-proof right up to the point when a bear walks out of the tree-line or it smells a large cat. (or it sees something else that might eat a horse )
Oh my gosh I get it. I have known this since day one horses are prey and they have instincts but this horse is domesticated, trained, and bred to do what she does. I have not once stated I believe she is bombproof so I don't know what you're talking about. There are no bears or anything that will hurt in an arena. Just because it is a new place should not be an excuse for a horse to act up. If the blinkers make her worse, fine I won't use them but if they keep her focused, of course I'm going to play with her instincts and use it to my advantage. |

You don't know much about horses do you? I can walk into any Bass Pro Shop.... and come out with bottles of bear and lion pee.... While you sit there talking about blinkers and pain.. Someone else is sprinkling this stuff throughout your pattern
You don't understand a prey animal can smell things that you cannot?
Soo.. you're saying you like to sprinkle pee in the arena................
I thought this was about blinkers, and now I've got to worry about people spreading pee everywhere!!!!!! |

I do know of a few horses that did not make a rodeo horse but did great at the 5 d's show, rodeo's just have so much going on. Be very careful if you do put blinkers on her, if shes this way now I think shes going to panic. Had a friend that tryed blinkers on her mare and the mare painc coming out of the second barrel and ran into the back fence.
Have you ever had her eye sight ckecked? Just to rule out any problems with her eyes.
And just wondering |

Last owner never hauled her, I'm the only one who has hauled her. I sent her to a trainer near me to season her for two months. She fell in love with my mare and so she offered me discounted training board in exchange for her being able to take my mare and run her as her back up horse. So this horse was with the trainer being hauled to many places and also being hauled with me whenever she didn't need her. We went to many places together as well, as I was able to run youth while my trainer ran her in open. She is consistently in the 2D if we can keep her off the second barrel.
We both agree this mare could never be a rodeo horse, but that doesn't justify her actions when we are at a quiet 5D race. She wants me to try blinkers on at home and then try them out in an arena we have hauled to often and see where we can go from there. I just wanted to see if people have experience with this because I feel like I am stuck in a corner. This horse is awesome, but I want to be able to go the NBHA super shows and not worry if it's a rodeo arena or not.. |

| I'm not saying "tools" shouldn't be utilized however more often than not the RIDER has more to do with it than they think or want to admit. I see so many people using "tools" to compensate for their impatience and riding skill. According to OP it's an on going problem and she doesn't trust her horse not to act a fool, I'd bet the lack of confidence and trust DOES effect her riding and spills over to horse.
We put blinkers on our track horses but it's bc they are 2 yr olds and you don't really get to season them to crowds.
Have you ever had her vision checked? |

That is also a concern. I am having my vet come do an annual check up on her next month to rule out eyes, teeth, chiropractic work, feet, anything that could be causing her to act in such a way. I do admit that her being so looky puts me on edge and does affect my riding, but also in exhibition when it is our first time in said new arena and I don't know what to expect, I ride like normal. Then come the actual run I'm sure I ride a little different because exhibition is my way of knowing what to expect, am I going to have to push her past the barrels harder because she sees the sign or is this sign not a threat to her? Once I know, I'm sure I ride differently in both situations. |

How did she do with the trainer when she hauled her as her back up horse? Was she spooking with her as well? I would have her eyes checked to rule any problems out with her eyesight and then go from there. |

| Yes, she was spooky as well but of course I am not as skilled as a trainer and so she was able to handle it a little better than what I am capable of. She gave her a little bit of Ace I believe before bigger shows and was able to keep her moving. Her performance was not as great as a smaller show though, but at least she was able to finish the pattern which is all I am asking for lol. I don't want to win, I just want to have good runs no matter the venue |
