So true! We use a wood burning heater as our main source of heat. When we came home we got the fire going and re-loaded it two times at least and went to bed. I would wake up the next am with my bedroom electric space heater going (with tip safety and a temp shutoff when it reaches a certain temp). It never got more than 58 degrees in my bedroom. I was about to freeze. Fire had burnt out in the fireplace. Hubby had gotten up and left for work. Outside it was a chilly 9 degrees. I took off work since I work in the woods each day (actually for two days). Wind chill was -15 I think? Had to actually wear gloves. Not an option to go without. Many layers of clothes. Poor truck had to actually warm up before we could move.

Naturally a horse develops colic symptoms. Hauled to vet on Monday evening in 18 degrees. People actually waved me past on the way to the vet. I guess they realized only an idiot or an emergency would be out in this weather. Made it in record time and avoided an after hours fee. Turns out just anemic and getting over a virus of some sort (repo horse that wasn't vaccinated this year). She wouldn't eat and was laying down a lot. I had a thermometer defective from the factory.

Water in feed room broke pipes 3 times. Its now capped off until I can fix it this weekend. This is actually after I took the time to cover the pipes with the black tube pipe insulation. It turns out that cracks run a LONG way on pipes. Practically up into the fittings. We keep a rubbermaid box of pipe fittings at the house. Since I have to re-plumb I'm going to add a hot water spigot to the outside of the barn with an insulated box cover.

I do know that my facebook feed was covered up with people fixing broken pipes the past few days. My darn dogs have destroyed 3 faucet covers and remove the insulated nylon bag ones daily. Bitter yuck doesn't stop them. Next step is spray cooking oil and cayenne pepper.

Southerners just don't do cold.

They rarely cancel school here and still make the kids go outside to play even when it is below zero. I remember our bus getting stuck in snow or ice and we just had to wait until another one came to get us and walk out to where it could make it. I always hoped for snow days but never happened while I was in school.

Where is this that the kids go out for recess when it is below zero?

Around here if its too cold for recess outside the kids play in the gym or watch a movie.

I have a lot of family in Arizona and during winters like this (tonnes of snow and major cold snaps) I wonder, why am I here?? My daughter has yet to see school cancelled though....

In the South we have "hurricane days".  The school district calendar designates three "hurricane make-up days" on the master calendar.  Once the winds get over 35 mph the school buses can't cross the bridges so school is closed.  Also, many schools are hurricane shelters so school can't open up until it is safe to cross the bridges.  By bridges I am talking about tall bridges over water to the barrier islands which make up about 1/4 of our county.

Barrelhorseluva - 2014-01-09 7:51 AM  It doesn't even snow here, but because of record cold temps, the news listed certain schools were closed.
Here they still let kids outside to recess unless it is below -10!

rodeomom3 - 2014-01-09 6:54 AM  That is exactly how it is and our news stations preempt shows and talk about it ALL day long :).

You are lucky....here, they start talking about it 4 or 5 days BEFORE it hits.........The first year we lived down here, I was convinced that it was going to be a blizzard....phhhhht ! I didn't even get a picture of it before it melted.....
