Can't wait for NBHA to get going!!!!! Just moved to Del Rio for work, and am pretty interested in finding any one positive thing about it. Don't think I'll be sampling the night life, I don't think my crowd would live through the cultural difference. I won't be dropping my guard anytime soon, too much cartel and illegal traffic activity for comfort. Going to try really hard not to wake up chained in a basement in Mexico. I know I sound negative, but this place freaks me out....

I guess I'm not freaked out by Del Rio because I live out on a ranch away from town, even though we do have illegals coming through the property. Neighbors ranch hands found two dead bodies a couple of weeks ago, about a half mile from our ranch headquarters. Not sure if they died from exposure (extreme heat) or killed by their 'Coyote' (drug runners). Doubt we will ever know what happened to them. I hear Border Patrol keeps a DNA data base on returned illegals, hopefully their families will at least know why they don't write or call home.

There are lots of team ropings in and around Del Rio, the barrelracing is just getting back in action after several years of no leadership or organization by any locals. I'm not out on the rodeo trail anymore, in between horses (a cripple 18-yr old, and a 5-yr that thinks he's a bucking horse).

I do like the Vineyard, they have great pressed Olive Oil grown there, too.

It's certainly not Dallas/Fort Worth, took me six-months to get over moving down here, but we do have Fedex, UPS, the postal service, and Ebay. If I can't get things that way, guess I don't need them anyway.

Perhaps I'd didn't give enough details, bady decomposed bodies, basically skulls, and feet with a little bit of meat of them. Apparently, the varmints got to them, so they would have had to have been in the neighbor's pasture for some time. The remains were just found two weeks ago. LOL!!!

I'm out on a ranch too, and about 15 miles from the next neighbor. (I think). We're exactly 7 miles from the border itself. I know that unless they're desperate, illegals will try to avoid houses and bases that they know are there. I also sort of feel that since we're still close to the border, they're still moving pretty good, even in extreme heat. It's the desperate ones that are scary, along with the ones you accidentally stumble upon carrying drugs. They don't want to be seen, and I don't want to see them. Still, chance is chance, and it works in funny ways. I've been in South Texas for over three years, and have been running the roads and ranches south and west of Catarina, Cotulla, and Carrizo Springs. Dilley, Gardendale, Tilden, Pearsall, Uvalde, Big Wells, and all the little crappy towns in between have also been front and center in my life. The gas and oil companies and contractors have safety meetings about what to do and how to act if you are attacked by illegals, and incidents like these are not unrecorded. I have seen many illegals while road running, but luckily, it was just the guys in flip flops and shorts moving through at a trot. Still, I know that they are humans, and smart, and strong. I don't discredit desperation, and I know how ruthless I would get under similar circumstances. I'm tough, and aggressive, and I always credit the other guy to be more so, and a whole lot stronger and faster than I.

I do feel safer out on this ranch than I would closer to town, I won't lie there. But at the same time, it is worrisome because I'm completely aware that our safety is completely up to us. There is no one to hear us cry for help, and help is more than 20 minutes away. 20 minutes is a long time. I do choose to have my head up, and to be freaked out, because if something were to happen, I'm going to need that edge. I'm not scared, I continue my daily life and care for my animals as normal. But I am armed. I have my dogs with me. I keep my keys in my pocket. I have my cell phone with me. I look around and in the back of the vehicle before I get in, I peek into buildings and don't forget to check the overhead. I let the dogs into the house first, because they'll freak if there's a stranger. I have weapons stashed around in odd places. I'm fixing to set up cameras everywhere, so I'll know if there's "brown foots" padding around. Little precautions don't take long, and they might save myself or my husband some time. I haven't forgotten that the border area is very very dangerous, and there are tough, desperate, physically fit men and women coming within mere moments of everything I treasure. I do understand that if I get surprised and jumped, I'm done. A lot of us "safety up" when we feel insecure during a barrel run. Well, I'm safetied up!

On a positive note, the Chiles in town cooks a great ribeye, the HEB is practically Mecca, and y'all have a Tractor Supply. Two McDonalds never hurt any community, and the gas station attendant was extremely sweet to me. So far, so good. :)

I completely agree on the safety.  Conceal carry license is a must but needs to have follow up on regular trips to the range to practice drills.  Anyone in the area can contact me regarding these things & I can provide information on training, ranges, & even ammo.

I live in town (about 2 mile from the border), & can see the border from my bedroom.  We walk our dogs in an area in town close by that is undeveloped land on a regular basis.  we've seen the Border Patrol picking up illegals there.  I'm not nieve & can't let my guard down either.  I work with newly released inmates, mexican nationals & my office sits at the border fence!  Gotta have situational awareness on a daily basis but I'm not afraid to go anywhere here.  Just not going to Mexico and don't suggest anyone else does unless  you have someone go with you that knows their way around & go with a purpose.

Wow you border women are tough!! You have my greatest admiration! My friends and inused to love to go across shopping. Sit in cantinas listen to music and have a few! It was sooo much fun! Haven't been in years and we sure miss it. We even went way down on the copper canyon train and went to some remote villages and so loved the people there!no more tho ;( As for del rio I wonder if they still have boat tours on amistad/ pecos river to see the petroglyphs?? That would be something great to do if you like history/geology. You can get books on the local Rock art to read before you go which makes it more meaningful. Love that stuff myself ;)

The George Paul - Daddy of 'Em all- is still a huge deal.  We still haven't gone to it yet.
There's no tours on Amistad or Pecos for the cave paintings anymore but the lake & river have dropped drastically because of the drought.  People can or could take their own boats to see it but it's kinda iffy.  Kinda too close to mexico for comfort & way too desolate!
We've been able to see the panther from bike riding in Seminole Canyon.

There's a war going on along our borders and our government turns a blind eye to it. We use to love to go over to Nuevo Laredo. I feel sorry for all of the vendors that had shops there. We went over so much that some of them remembere our names.
