shelltc - 2014-02-24 11:43 AM I'm doing a partial paleo. I don't do extremes but I did lose 17 lbs in 2 months. I'm kind of stuck right now so I'm going to do some walking! I cut out all white rice potatoes cereal pasta etc. I eat a lot of fruit and nuts and eggs.bright colored vegetables. I did not cut out cheese and I do eat some Greek yogurt. I feel better than in a long time. My husband recently had a terrible arthritis flare that he never had before so he is trying it too. I also bought gluten free mixes such as cornbread and brownies and they are really good and don't cause me bloat. I used to feel bloated and puffy all the time. Speaking of bloat- I also cut out beer except a little when I'm playing 42!!!
Most of the gluten free mixes are packed full of calories so you need to limit them to lose weight. I'm a huge fruit eater and they are also full of calories because of the natural sugar in them. At this point..I just care about not feeling hungry so I don't limit them but if I decide to try to drop more weight..I will.

Yes they are high caloried but we WILL have a little cornbread with our nonpaleo beans in this old house ;) and our black eyed peas too. Some things just gotta have! But we have cut out so much processed and junk and added more vegetables that I think we're much better off than before even tho it's certainly not full paleo. ( we don't have beans every week!) really I don't know how a bean could hurt you too much, but they are not on the paleo list!!

I agree and a lot of people tweek the paleo diet and add some dairy, beans etc. Sure beats eating crap food and I do believe not eating processed is the key. The added preservatives and junk sweetners like corn syrup, is a deal killer.

The down side of the Paleo is you need to shop more because of no preservatives and eating fresh foods.

thank god i can have sweet potatoes. i love them. the problem i'm going to have is hot cocoa... hmmm how can i make that paleo friendly?

i have a long history with special diets for my health problems. i finally got on a "fungus free" diet (know the cause.com) which them led me to the  Paleo diet. I was on it for 2 weeks, then relapsed over the holidays lol. Now i'm gearing up to get back to paleo, vitacost.com has some great things! I just placed an order and there is a $14 coupon exp 3/2 for orders over 100.

I live way out on the ranch so keeping fresh things available can be a problem, but I'm going to do the best I can! Beans are a hard one for me to let go of, I'm a mexican food junkie

~~Legumes, just like grains, contain lectins and other compounds that were developed by plants to fight off insects. These lectins increase intestinal permeability and may trigger your immune system to turn against your own body, leading to autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, lupus and vitiligo, according to Dr. Loren Cordain. One of the world’s leading experts on Paleolithic diets, Cordain is a member of the faculty of the department of health and exercise science at Colorado State University, and author of "The Paleo Diet."

~~Within the Paleo diet, there are a lot more foods that you can eat, than what you can’t eat. However, when first considering the option of switching over to this highly healthy diet, you may find yourself paying more attention to what you will no longer be able to consume. It’s human nature. You always want what you can’t have, and it’s completely okay to be concerned about the few things that you will have to cut out that may seem healthy to you right now. You may seem uneasy about cutting the following out of your diet, but you’re about to see the reason behind doing just that, and it extends well past the fact that cavemen didn’t contain them.

Legumes

You’ve probably wondered why Paleo doesn’t involve peanuts? Well, it’s not a nut but rather a legume. Question answered, right? You may now be wondering why the Paleo diet doesn’t consist of any legumes. Since the Paleo diet is all about eating the foods that cavemen thrived on, legumes aren’t included in this diet because legumes needed to be cooked in order to be edible. Therefore, the cavemen didn’t gather legumes. As for the health factor, legumes contain phytates which absorb nutrients and cause inflammation, and since the Paleo diet is all about eating great and feeling even better, you can certainly understand why legumes are not within the dietary guidelines. Legumes to avoid include lentils, all beans, peanuts as mentioned previously, soybeans and chickpeas.

Dairy

You may also be wondering why dairy isn’t included in the Paleo diet. Weren’t there cows back in the caveman days? Sure but people didn’t eat dairy products before animals were domesticated and they were fine without it. In fact, they would have probably been completely okay with it, however that can’t be said about the Paleo diet today simply because of the way dairy is processed amongst the majority of supermarkets. The environment, conditions and foods that cows today are fed are anything but healthy for them, which in turn, doesn’t make their resources any better. Then, the pasteurisation of milk drastically alters the milk proteins and essentially kills beneficial bacteria and enzymes.

Other things that you may be worried about no longer included within your diet include grains, sugars and transfats but that’s an article for another day. Rest be assured though because you certainly won’t miss these items when on the Paleo diet. At first, you may notice their absence but you will be feeling so fabulous as a result of the foods you’re containing  that you truly aren’t going to be paying much attention to the things that you no longer have. It’s just a little bump at the beginning of the caveman adaptation. The Paleo diet isn’t just not eating foods that cavemen didn’t have. There’s a lot more reason behind it, as mentioned before. Even if the cavemen decided to enjoy dairy back in the day, which didn’t happen, it simply wouldn’t have the same benefits to us today since the way products are now made.

There are many different Paleo sites that have different opinions on what you can exactly not eat. I really missed potatoes so I decided to add them about once a week and see how it affected me. Once again...when I decided to get serious about dropping more weight I will go strict Paleo but until then I think depriving yourself completely of things you love you set yourself up to fail. I know some people eat what they want one day a week which I know wouldn't work for me so I have never gone there..LOL

Here is another view on potatoes.

~~Important things to consider about potatoes:
1.Peel the potato! White potatoes are in the nightshade family, but unlike most other nightshades, most of the anti-nutrients are in the skin. This is because the skin of the tuber, in addition to the stem and leaves, is where the plant has defense mechanisms. Glycoalkaloids are the primary toxin in potatoes (almost all plants have toxins – please note.) Age of the potato, skin damage, and exposure to light can increase glycoalkaloid content in the tuber as well – so buy fresh, undamaged potatoes and keep them out of the light. Again, most of the glocoalkaloids are in the skin of the tuber, so peel those potatoes.
2.Always Buy Organic potatoes. In modern times, potatoes have been used in cultivation as a means to pull toxins out of the soil. (Potatoes are #9 in the “Dirty Dozen”)
3.Avoid green potatoes, or potatoes with green spots – they contain saponins (which are also toxic).
4.Potatoes break down to glucose. They are a big source of carbs – 26 grams in a medium potato, on average. Potatoes are not recommended for consumption by people who are trying to lose weight.
5.Potatoes have a high glycemic index / low glycemic load. The GI number can vary highly from mid 50′s all the way up to the high 80′s, depending on the type of potato and how it is cooked. (see chart) – Got this clarification of GI vs. GL from Free The Animal, good stuff Richard.
6.Better bowel function? A portion of the carbohydrates in potatoes do not break down in the small intestine. For most people, this produces a fiber-like effect and helps improve bowel function. For others, the insoluble starch will promote IBS-like symptoms. Be mindful of how you react.
7.Potatoes contain some miRNA’s, even when cooked, which seem capable of interfering with human gene expression (Andrew of Evolvify writes a compelling argument against potatoes, rice and wheat – making some logical predictions based on micro RNA (miRNA) studies with rice. Read his outstanding post here.)

I am a little confused.  I Googled the eating plan and several food lists.  Some say no potatoes at all.  Some say sweet potatoes are OK.  How about oatmeal?  Greek yogurt?  Peppers? Tomatoes? Do some people just add in what they want?

sweet potatoes are ok - just not regular potatoes due to the starch...oatmeal is a no, greek yogurt is dairy so it's a no (unless you're primal, whole different deal), all veggies like peppers and tomatoes are definitely ok - here's a great list of paleo foods that you can have - once you get the hang of it, you can create some great meals!

I eat a small bowl of oatmeal too, any suggestions for us?

I will say, that my husband and I started this about 6 months ago.  It really does make your joints feel better.  We noticed in about a month the change, we were not stiff etc.
