 You get what you give

There was an older local guy around me that used to swear by giving them cocaine and I've heard of others doing it. Also was told it used to be very common on the racetrack. I didn't ask about it or why, I didn't want to even get that involved. I remember the first big race I went to (it was $10,000 added with a $60 entry fee so you can guess how many people that drew in) and you'd walk through the stalls and there would be more riders with needles & syringes than not. I watched one guy mix 5 different things in a 60cc syringe, it was red in color by the time he was done mixing, and right in the vein it all went. He was in the top 5 that day, I watched him run. I try to just ignore that stuff now. Another local girl runs her BB gelding on 6cc of ace, he runs with his manhood hanging down bc of it and she has given both her horses seizures from it at shows. Once they get up she gets right on and runs, doesn't care at all. That's quite extreme, 6cc of ace split betwene mine would have all 3 of them on the ground out cold.
I gave mine lasix bc he bleeds and previcox for the start of navicular, but otherwise he's clean. I had given some small doses of bute or banamine before when I'm at 4 day races, where we're usually stalled on concrete, but thats not for running thats just to help him be comfortable on the concrete. We're off the lasix now thanks to EquiPulmin & more exercise, which he thinks is a treat and licks it right out of the bowl so I feel much better giving that instead of being the girl who did have to calculate my time out to give the shot. Makes it easier even though I do have to pay attention to when I give the EquiPulmin. I do Gaatro-Plex paste too because it's proven to keep his ulcers away after years of fighting with the, and he also thinks it's candy too, so it's a win for him lol. But I feel like I have to do a lot and none of it gives me a competitive edge at all, just keeps the old man comfortable at 19. I won't ever dabble in the "weird" stuff that people give, like cocaine apparently
The seizures were probably unintentional carotid arterial punctures. A lot of people give IV shots too low in the neck and you're just asking to get the carotid when you do. Depending on what you give, an arterial injection can kill a horse. | |

Yes, I used to know her well and have watched her give IV shots, she goes in at a very straight angle. She does it often, I don't know why she doesn't just give it orally to save the trouble. When they do have seizures they flip over backwards every time, it will most likely take a broken back on one to get her to stop. Lord knows what the tree of her saddle looks like after all the impacts | |

Location: Do I hear Banjos? | I don't barrel race anymore...I do Distance Competitive Trail (NATRC) one thing I like is the Drug Free sport policy. We have a list of prohibited substances and treatments and we do draw blood to test at rides. We don't test every horse/every ride...but often enough that it keeps people from going down that path. | |

| I agree but i will say i had 1 that for 6 month i gave her resprine and it helped chill her then we quit and she was a mare place 1d
but you can give a horse all the drugs you want its not going to make them run faster than god made them. | |

| My horses get high quality forage and nutritional supplements including hemp and kelp. I have one mare who I have on GastroGuard sometimes due to her ulcers.
My mare will sometimes get a BCAA paste after her run to help recovery, it's just nutrients, amino acids and electrolytes.
My one gelding used to get really hot so I have him a dab of essential oil on his nose to help calm him. Worked like a charm!
I heard a lady once recommend 20cc of Absolut Vodka right into the vein to help calm a hot horse. She learned it at the track. | |

Wow 6cc's of ace, that's insane!! I remember when i did cross country racing, 50 miles in a day, the most "dope" I would give my mustang was a shot of Red Cell..haha and away we went! Man crazy to hear what people to do just to try and win. Sad. :( | |

Yes, it's been around for years..... I can remember riding in my state high school rodeo finals in the early 70s and seeing folks 'shoot up' their barrel and pole horses just prior to their runs right there in the alley way....... Main-lining was a big thing back then. I remember being told they were giving them B12 straight to the vein. I actually have no idea what they were giving them. Personally, I've avoided giving my horses drugs unless it was a pain med to treat an injury. Just how I roll. And I've had to stand behind lots of horses in the awards presentations that were no doubt drugged. But, my conscious is clear.
