For my hard keeper I use THE Muscle Mass he is 27 and has kept good weight all winter. Of course where I live the winter was not too harsh. Plus he gets Bluebonnet and Omnis cubes. But THE Muscle Mass has made a world of difference with him.

Alfalfa helps a lot. I also like to use Platinum Performance Healthy Weight which is a flax oil.

Alfalfa works best for me too.

The only thing that worked for me was, 10 pounds of good hay morning and night with 4 pounds of Tribute Kalm Ultra. I also used DAC bloom and oil on top. He looks beautiful now and ive been able to take him off the DAC and hes down to 3 pounds of Tribute Kalm n EZ. Ive never not seen a difference when using the DAC and my horses LOVE IT !!

Replace your hay with alfalfa, and reduce your grain load or even cut it out completely.  The highest quality forage you can put in front of your horse, the better they will do.  High grain loads can actually be counter productive and create issues in the hind gut.

Rice Bran and lots of quality hay; alfalfa, timothy and peanut, along with coastal.  Basically, keep hay available at all times.

To add to what others are saying, I have had great luck with Amplify by Purina in addition to a solid feed program.

I second THE Muscle Mass with the blends for my 27 year old plus I add Purina Amplify to his feed along with THE MM. Then he gets the Omnis cubes, pasture and grass hay.

I feed Triple Crown Complete and alfalfa pellets - since I really cannot get my hands on any alfalfa hay around here. I feed perennial peanut hay, when I can get my hands on it, as well. When I can, they get that, morning and night, along with their grain. And, they have good grass hay in front of them at all times since my pastures are lacking. I soak my alfalfa pellets in warm water, always. I want the extra water in their guts, as much as possible. Then, I just add the feed, right on top.

I couldn't get my 23 year old to put weight on with anything except Nutrena Empower Boost. It's a rice bran supplement and I chose it because of his cushings. I had him on 2lbs a day until I felt he had gained sufficient enough, his topline is better than my barrel horse right now. After being on that for a few months I decided to switch my grain to their ProForce Fuel line, which has the Boost in it. All is well and he went from eating a full 3qt scoop of the old feed which was 2lbs, plus the 2lbs of Boost a day. Now he eats a hair under 2lbs twice a day of the Fuel and maintains his weight nicely. I've used FatCat and Manna's Senior Weight Accelerator in the past and had good results as well on the same horse when he was younger. However the last couple years those haven't worked for him.
