I think you run into that anywhere. I contacted a seller about 1 horse, they gave me all the info that i asked about but also mentioned other horses they had for sale. I totally fell for one of the other horses. They priced him, sent me videos and I was looking into shipping, then nothing. They just completely stopped communicating with me. Now they have the horse I was ready to purchase up for sale for a higher price tag then they quoted me 3 weeks ago

I don't sell very often.....partly because my horses are part of my 4 legged family, partly because I hate dealing with people.

The last horse I sold I owned for several years, put her up for sale and took her off the market several times before the perfect family bought her.  At the time, I didn't know they were perfect but they have turned out to be very much so in every way.

I recently bought a different horse, a reiner, very new to me to ride one.  It was evident the owner loved him very much and told me he was the "best horse I've ever owned."  And, that may be true, but, the more I work with the horse IMO opinion he has been very spoiled and let get away with things that drive me nuts.  Just a big reminder to me that everyone's point of view is different.

I eyed this one yesterday on CL but I'm not really in the market since it is almost Winter. I don't want a project to start until Spring. I thought he looked okay though.   http://wichita.craigslist.org/grd/4224355368.html

Much like Facebook... giggle, I clicked on the "suggested" link to some group and the add said "Great Trail horse, not scared of anything.  But will spook at some things....."  Why I don't like buying as much as I detest Selling.   I'd almost rather run them through a sale as to deal with individuals coming to try the horse, I'm sure the same can be said when I head to someone's house to "look"  Oh well, at least a few of us can see the humor in the "madness" of it all.

3KissHit - 2013-12-02 2:39 PM So, I was interested in a horse for sale on craigslist.org. I've been looking for a well bred prospect for months. Older then 5 and younger then 10. The horse was used as an all around horse, dressage, a little jumping, and trail riding. He is 14 and little older then what I was looking for but is a grandson of Dash for Cash and Special Elan and a Great Grandson of Beduino. They were only asking $875. I had been trying for 2 weeks to set up a time to come see him. The owner usually took 12 to 48 hours to get back to me and never really set up a decent time to see him. So I got off work around noon Wednesday and contacted her, she informed me she would be working in the evening and asked if Thursday or Friday would work. I said no to Thursday since it was Thanksgiving but agreed for Friday. I contacted her on Friday and she told me the horse had sold Wednesday…..okay grrrr I said I could come Wednesday. But then I look on Craigslist again on Saturday and there he is for sale for $3500 by the new owner! Buying and selling horses has been very frustrating lately.Does flipping of horses such as this bother anyone else? I'm not mad just bummed out I guess. Never worked with the Dash for Cash line and was looking forward to it. Maybe I'm just extra irritable this week….
They can ask $3500.00 or $35,000.00-getting it is a whole new ball game. I see people buy one at a sale then immediately list it on BHW for over twice what they gave for it.

I saw one of this years NFR qualifiers buy a horse off FB and then turn around and list it on BHW for THREE times what it was previously listed for only 12 HOURS earlier. The ad went on and on about how pleasant he had been to start and how well he was progressing. Very misleading in my opinion, as I know she couldn't have had time to put more than one ride on the horse with transporting and all. It definitely doesn't just happen on craigslist.....

I've seen that twice this year with the same seller---one was a Jud Little sale horse that I personally saw sell for $3000 (listed less than a week later for $10,000) and another was a horse I had seen coming through the Triangle Sale in Shawnee. I googled the horse and found 2 ads for her on BHW for $4000 prior to the sale. Less than a week after the sale she was for sale again on BHW for $7500 under the "new" owner.

is there a law that you can only mark one up a certain percentage? Is it based on time owned?

Never have heard this but I would be curious to know more.

Not that I'm aware of as long as there's no fraud or misrepresentation that you would feel strongly enough about to sue based on, and you would have to have some pretty staunch proof to not get it thrown out of court. There's no law against making money off people who aren't aware that they're being upcharged. A lot of people pay for the name that is behind the horse in situations like this, so they don't care that they're paying more as long as they can say they bought it from so-and-so. Caveat emptor = buyer beware!

I know of a person who will get a trailer load at the local sale barn and turn around and list them within a few weeks for WAY more than they paid. They also advertise themselves as a rescue and take in free horses, then turn around and run them through an auction. People give them horses on the promise that the horses have a safe home but they don't!!

I bought a 3yr old stud colt from a Craigslist ad several years ago.  Pics looked good. The seller was not a horse person but had the horse due to some legal problems between the seller and the previous owner. He was semi-broke and by Rare Bar. Decided to go to take a look at him and the poor baby was seriously underweight in a small pasture with lots of junk laying around.  I made a low ball offer which they refused.  It broke my heart to leave him there.  They called me with a counter offer about a week later which I jumped on.  He qualified for the UPRA finals this year.  This Craigslist purchase worked out great.  We love him.

We have bought a couple of nice horses off craigslist, as well as vehicles, goats and other misc things. Weve had our fair share of duds as well, and sales not work out. I just figure, if it doesnt work out, then we werent meant to have it.

I bought my mare, whos decently bred, off craigslist for $800. She has some kinks, and was greener then we were told. But we have run in the 18's with minimal hauling. I couldnt be happier with my craigslist purchase.

Now, Bingo, the mare i sold, was an awesome barrel horse (i was told). Clocked at the top of the 2D. Won a bunch of hay, saddles, etc. No proof aside from the items themselves. Found out later it was all true..... but it was all won on a different horse. shes now an awesome trail horse....
