outrundaizy - 2015-04-21 10:37 PM I think anything 17.3/17.4 and faster... But they better be running 1D on smaller patterns too to be titled a "consistent 1D horse"
This is how I feel for the most part. Its tough to judge if a horse is a true 1d, so many variables to consider. What if if a horse wins on smaller 14.3 patterns but clocks 17.5 on a standard?

I would just say 1D on smaller patterns 2D/3D on standard. Some horses just don't have the endurance or stride to clock that fast, but they can on a shorter pattern.

17.5 on a standard is still great though. At a barrel race like ANHA this would almost be a 3D time. At a WPRA rodeo this could place or even win.

So your saying ANHA regularly run 16.5's on a standard to make a 3D time 17.5's? A true WPRA standard? THe worlds record is I believe a 16.6

Yep, close! My colt ran an 18.75 on Sunday there last year and picked up a long check in the 5D. Paid more than most 1D runs somewhere else.

I LOVE ANHA runs!

I may get flamed for this but that's how I see it!!  1D on a standard is high 16, low 17.

So lets say your at futurity with the big dawgs and only 10 are in the 1D but they paid 8 spots. You wouldn't consider your horse that placed 9th a 1D horse?

I understand what your saying though....some ppl claim they have a 1d horse if he occasionally places in the bottom of the 1d sometimes.

LOL SOme people claim they have a 1D horse when they are at a show that uses 1 second splits and I have even seen some 1D brags where there were about 8 horses entered.

Sometimes it can be more about quality than quantity. In the winter when girls are getting runs on their good horses prior to going hard, if those 8 consist of an NFR qualifier and 3 circuit finals contestants then maybe winning it really is brag worthy. I've seen that happen around here before.

I take the previous arena runs into consideration if the numbers and competition level isnt there on a particular day.

If its a colt I trained that makes into the 1D against tough competition I brag every time!! Mainly bc i want him sold LOL I wouldn't word the ad as him being consistent tho..

That's subjective. A horse than wins the race on a standard pattern and everyone within a 1/2 second of that horse is in the 1D - I wouldn't put a "hard & fast rule" and say only horses that run low 17's are 1D horses. Some arenas have freaky fast ground and running sub 17 second runs is common. Some arenas with less than desireable conditions I have seen low 18's win the race.

It's definitly arena/ pattern dependent. There's lots of factors as we all know, ground, arena size, space from the barrels to the fence, all of it. I have a true 1D horse, I know this because everywhere I take him, barrel races and pro rodeos, he places in the 1D, no matter the size of the arena on a standard he consistently clocks 1D times. But arena is a huge factor, for example at a three day barrel race outdoor arena, standard pattern, dry shifty ground that was different everyday as it got more and more dry in the 100 degree summer weather, the barrels are out in the middle of no where because the arena is MASSIVE, I won the first night by 3 tenths, got third the next day, and won the third day by 3 tenths again, running dead last in the barrel race. There was definitely tough local/state competition there as well as girls running the MT pro rodeo circuit that summer who stopped thru on their way to rodeos and made some runs, this includes Jana Bean. The times I ran in that arena were 17.7, 18.0, and a 17.7. So definitely arena size and ground factor there. Then I take him somewhere like Pasco at the TRAC arena, US barrel racing record set there on a standard, and he runs in the middle of the 1D consistently everyday, 4 days in a row, low 17's. At that arena the barrels are closer to the fences and the ground is perfect. I think trying to measure your horse off of a "standard pattern" is just unrealistic as there's so many different things that go in to it. What makes a 1D horse is the ability to consistantly run and place in the 1D taking all of the conditions of the run in to consideration.

ANHA is  a true standard.  In 2013 Jackie Ganter ran a 16.60 to set a new record for ANHA that was previoulsy held by her mother Angela.  Jackie won the short go again this year with a 16.705, Jackie had the fastest average on her other horse to win the saddle.   Below are the 2014 top 10 shootout results for the 1D.

Very fast indeed but doesn't look like a 17.5 is regularly in 3D. :)

I have never seen a 16.5 there.  The 16.7 was the fastes time ran last year.   This is a 3 day race and as expected, runs get faster each go.   The first go is usually won with a high 16.8 or 9 or a 17.0.

I think people tend to get hung up on the whole "D" thing. You have to consider your goals. Most 1D jackpot horses can't draw a rodeo check. A lot of winning rodeo horses are 2D jackpot horses because they don't put forth the effort at a jackpot. Lisa Lockhart has even said about Louie that she has a NFR horse that runs 2D times. On average a standard pattern 1D time is roughly a 17.2 or so. Yet the record is, I believe, a 16.3 . I know that the arena record at Spanish Fork got shattered last year and is now a 16.8 on a standard. She outran the best in the rodeo world by 2/10ths. To lump all standard patterns into one category for a 1D time isn't realistic. My daughter won Laramie last year with an 18.00 on a standard and outran over 100 girls by 3/10ths. It was a mucky, muddy mess and she was simply the best of the weekend. Now most might look at that 18.0 on a standard as a 3D time and think it must have been a weak rodeo. That simply wasn't the case. The conditions made it what it was.

Ugh I have one of those horses. I call her 1D/2D because she's pulled checks in both but 90% of the time she's in the 1D but not actually placing. I'm proud that she still places so high because I didn't think she was that fast when I got her, but it's super frustrating to be so close and yet so far away lol

I agree. I would rather win the 2D than be low in the 1D every time! I like the D system. lol

Would a horse placing at the top of the 1D still be a 1D horse when he is sold and the new rider runs in the 4D. Oh so much to disagree about:)

AMEN! Takes a 1D rider to ride a 1D horse........just because I'm selling a horse that has consistently clocked in the 1D doesn't mean that will happen with the new owner.....I've seen it time and time again.

Common Sense and then some

I thought the world record on a standard set is 16.586 set by Courtney Duncan and Ms. Perky Bug in Brazil. The US record is a 16.643 set by Nicole Aichele and Biankus French Gril in Pasco, WA.  She broke Tanya Steinhoff's record time of 16.644 on Hot shot.  There are a handful of other verified 16.6's ....  These are smokin' fast times that you just don't see every year, all these times were on dang near perfect ground and the pattern size was verified.

I don't know what other organizations run, though I know of several that set the 90/105' pattern and use a shorter score line.

If you are running against tough competition and are consistently in the 1D, well you have a 1D horse.  Who cares what anyone else thinks as long as you are being honest with yourself and advertising? Plus, Google is our friend....

runsupport - 2015-04-23 3:30 PM Would a horse placing at the top of the 1D still be a 1D horse when he is sold and the new rider runs in the 4D. Oh so much to disagree about:)
AMEN! Takes a 1D rider to ride a 1D horse........just because I'm selling a horse that has consistently clocked in the 1D doesn't mean that will happen with the new owner.....I've seen it time and time again.
Yep, I am evidence of that, my girls quit riding when they went to college so I decided I needed something to do since no longer hauling them so I started riding.  The first time I ran one of the horses I won a 1D check- he took off and I was literally just hanging on, never touched him, really did not even need reins, lol.  I have never done that again.  My horses figured out I can't ride and throttled way back for me, I was just out of the 3D money at Glen Rose when they had the qualifier- that is a good run for me for my skill level.  One of my girls will occasionally decide to go and can hop on the same horse and run a second faster.
