 We always pen them next to each other before turning them out together.  A couple weeks and then we put them together in a real large field.  If we use a smaller field we pull out any horses that might be more aggressive and let the more docile ones get to know each other before putting the boss back in. Never had any troubles with it this way.

 I kept the new one in a pen so others could touch noses and get to know each other throug a fence. Doesn't stop every fight but if you hang with them a lot at first, you can quickly break anything up. I slowly add the new one with my biggest buddy type horse and increase time and frequency to turn out. If gelding and mares are together already, there's usually one in the crowd that wants to fight...all because of a girl :)

I got a new mare and have had her in an adjacent lot for the last few days and hauled her with two others over the weekend.
