I'm just curious as to opinions on training in regard to a horses natural style of turning. If a horse is using more front end pull vs hind end push, v-turning vs wrapping the barrel... Do you make a horse turn the way you want or do you allow the horse to turn in the way it feels more comfortable to him/her?

My mare that I have right now does not dig her butt in the ground and wrap a barrel like I would like to see her do, she definitely has more of a v-shape to her turns. but she is very long strided and fast and she does great. i try to get her to flex around them a little bit more, but I wont push her to completely change things. She is comfortable with her style and shwoing great results, so i let her do her thing!

Once mine are past their slow work on the pattern, I won't really pick at their turning style much unless their body is really out of
position
(like dropping their shoulder or swinging their hip
). At higher speed, I do kinda let them find out what works for them. I don't change the way I do my slow work away from the pattern, tho. I move their hip, shoulders, etc. and keep their body
position correct so it becomes muscle memory.
I had one that was heavier on his front end. I did a lot of drilling on getting his rear end under him, but that is only because he would shoulder a barrel if I didn't. He was still sorta front-endy, but turned fast and was pretty correct so I left that alone. I did have to give him more room going into his turns so he could stay up. I have one now that is very bendy and can really wrap a barrel, but that's just her style. I wish I could teach every one how to do that, but she just does it without much effort on my part.

A year or so, maybe more there was a great thread I think titled "Lets talk turns..." or something like that, very informative and with lots of insights from a few that we don't see around here often enough anymore.
